No. 20 Women’s Lacrosse Downed by No. 22 St. John Fisher, 11-4

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team fell on the road to the No. 22 St. John Fisher Cardinals on Friday afternoon, losing by the score 11–4. The Bombers are now 9–6 on the season.

Caroline Wise led the Bombers in scoring with two goals, while Sydney Phillips and Maizy Veitch also scored. Lily Cody was the lone Bomber to record an assist. Wise also led Ithaca in draw controls and was second in ground balls with four. Kaitlyn Russell picked up six ground balls and caused a team-high four turnovers. Lexi Held was in net for the Bombers and made eight saves.

It was a quiet first quarter for both teams, as the only goal in the period was from the Cardinals early on. Hannah Kumpf got on the scoreboard first for St. John Fisher with 10:16 left in the first. The Bombers defense played well, limiting the Cardinals to only three shots the rest of the quarter with only one on target. However, the offense could not get going in the opening frame. Ithaca was unable to register a shot after Kumpf's goal, and additionally turned the ball over five times and recorded a shot clock violation.

The second quarter saw the pace pick up slightly for both teams, but the Cardinals cashed in on their chances first. Kumpf scored another unassisted goal three minutes into the frame, and Sydney Carpenter extended the Cardinals' lead to three with eight minutes left. With just under seven minutes left, Ithaca finally got on the board, as Wise cut the deficit to two off of a free position shot. In the final minute of the first half, Phillips was the one to take a free position shot, and she was able to trim St. John Fisher's lead to one heading into the half.

After scoring the last two goals of the second quarter, the Bombers were unable to carry over any momentum into the second half, as St. John Fisher dominated the third quarter for a 6–0 period. Kumpf scored her third goal to complete the hat trick just over two minutes into the frame, and Kaley Griffin followed her shortly after. With 7:29 left, Courtney O'Dea got on the board, and Carpenter added onto the lead one minute later. The Cardinals capped off their dominant quarter with two more goals from Kumpf, extending their lead to 9–2. The Bombers only recorded three shots, one shot on goal, and six turnovers.

The fourth quarter began with Kumpf scoring her sixth and final goal of the day, giving the Cardinals double digit goals with about 13 minutes left. Wise got the Bombers back on the board with 12:13 left in the game, ending an 18:28 scoring drought. Veitch scored for the Bombers with 3:29 left, but the Cardinals got that goal right back with O'Dea scoring eight seconds later, making the score 11–4.

St. John Fisher outshot Ithaca 32–18 and turned the ball over just half as many times as Ithaca did, 9–18. The Cardinals held a slight advantage in ground balls and draw controls, leading 23–21 and 10–9. The four-goal output is the second lowest goal total for the Bombers against St. John Fisher, with the lowest being three in a 3–6 loss in 2014.

The Bombers will look to get back in the win column at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26 against Hamilton College at Higgins Stadium.
