TROY, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 11 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team got back on the winning track with a 13-9 Liberty League victory at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, March 18. The win improves IC's record to 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in Liberty League action.
Chloe Nordyke led the way for the Bombers as she scored six goals on the day, to go along with one assist.
Maizy Veitch netted four goals in the win, while
Sydney Phillips scored twice, and
Hayley Armstrong added another score. Armstrong also assisted on two goals.
Lexi Held made 14 saves in all 60 minutes in cage and scooped up eight ground balls. Nordyke chipped in five ground balls, while
Maggie Mandel and
Elizabeth Green each picked up four ground balls.
RPI got on the board first just 34 seconds into the contest, but the Bombers knotted things up at 1-1 two minutes later on the first goal by Nordyke.
The Engineers went back on top, 2-1, at the 10:03 mark and Nordyke brought the game at to even with 8:42 left in the opening quarter. From there, RPI netted three straight goals to build a 5-2 advantage five minutes into the second period.
Nordyke and Veitch pulled IC back to within a goal with back-to-back tallies just 1:15 apart to make it 5-4 with 8:10 on the clock. IC and RPI traded goals over the final stretch of the second quarter as Nordyke scored once again to send the Bombers into intermissions trailing 6-5.
In the second half, RPI went back ahead by two goals early in the third, but the Bombers tied the game back up at 7-7 behind an advantage goal from Veitch and a marker by Phillips.
RPI regained the lead with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Bombers would have the final say as Veitch scored with 1:28 left to deadlock the game heading into the final 15 minutes.
It was all Ithaca over the final 15 minutes as Phillips staked the Bombers to a 9-8 lead within the opening two minutes. RPI tied it back up 12 seconds later, but the Bombers would score the final four goals of the game to account for the 13-9 final.
Nordyke scored twice during that stretch, while Veitch and Armstrong accounted for the other two goals.
Ithaca is back in action next weekend for back-to-back home games on March 24-25 against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
