ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's swimming and diving program are currently in first place with 1,272 points following the third day of the 2023 Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships, which has taken place inside the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium. IC currently holds the lead over RPI (958.5) and Vassar (916) who make up the top-3.
The Bombers saw
Caroline Armistead swim to a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly recording a time of 2:16.20. In the evenings B-Final,
Lauren Brady won the event with a season-best time of 2:15.87 as she trimmed almost three seconds from her morning preliminaries time.
First year
Sonia Mlakar continued her impressive debut in a postseason competition as she was crowned the champion of the 100-yard backstroke on Friday evening. She put together an NCAA B-Cut time of 55.96. Finishing right behind her in second was teammate
Katie Champagne who had a finals time of 57.17.
In the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke,
Abigail Ignagni was the top Ithaca performer as she finished the race seventh with a recorded time of 1:07.19. RIT's Anna Peshenko touched the final wall in 1:04.89 as she took home first followed by RPI's Ola Nawrocki (1:05.94).
The divers returned to action, this time competing on the 1-meter board. It was all Ithaca as they claimed each spot within the top-5 as
Leah Levin won the event. Levin who totaled a final score of 505.10, followed by
Abby Marraccino (504.95),
Karalyn Pawcio (495.55),
Rachel Lange (474.95) and
Eliza Salus was the fifth-place finisher scoring a total of 440.60.
All eight divers who competed in Friday's final achieved NCAA Regional qualifying scores as each Ithaca student-athlete will be competing in the upcoming NCAA Diving Regional that will be held in the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium beginning on Friday, February 24.
In arguably the closest finish of the night, the 800-yard freestyle was determined by three tenths of a second. Ithaca's
Naomi Fry,
Erin Kiley,
Angela Merch and
Josephine Holman won the event with their finals time of 7:43.35. Finishing with a 7:43.38 were the four swimmers from Vassar.
The Liberty League Championships finish up tomorrow with the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 400-yard freestyle relay, 1,650-yard freestyle and men's 3-meter diving. Swimming preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by diving preliminaries at 1 p.m. and finals for both at 6 p.m.
