Women’s Swimming & Diving Build Upon Its Lead at the LL Championships; Mlakar Takes Home First in the 100 Fly

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's swimming & diving program put together another solid day of swimming as they showcased their speed and depth on Thursday as they built upon their lead with 869 team points, with Vassar (697) in second and RPI (633.5) in third.

The Bombers opened the night taking home a first place finish on the opening event. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sonia Mlakar, Abigail Ignagni, Jane Pfeufer and Emily VanderSleen took first place by nearly a second, setting the Ithaca College school record with their time of 1:34.15. Their time qualifies them for the NCAA B-cut and was also an association record.

In the women's 400-yard individual medley, Angela Merch grabbed an impressive second-place finish with a time of 4:35.86, which collected IC 28 team points. Jenna Molnar finished ninth at 4:48.83 and Lauren Brady was ninth at 4:49.31.

Mlakar took home another first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and an NCAA B-cut time of 55.89. Her time was good enough for the new Liberty League Championship record. VanderSleen added a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 57.87.

Pfeufer took a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.02. Naomi Fry followed with a seventh-place finish and Josephine Holman took eighth in the event.

In the final event of the night, the Bombers 400-yard medley relay team that consisted of Sonia Mlakar, Abigail Ignagni, Emily VanderSleen and Jane Pfeufer took second place with a time of 3:50.86. The time was a B-Cut and was faster than the previous championship record but RPI's four swimmers won the event with an association record time of 3:48.82. Mlakar continued on her impressive debut at the LL Championships as her backstroke on the relay reset the Ithaca school record.

The Liberty League Championships continue tomorrow with the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, women's 1-meter diving and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Swimming preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by diving preliminaries at 1 p.m. and finals for both at 6 p.m.
