UPDATED NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP: After the first round games on Wednesday, there are now just 16 teams remaining in the NCAA Division III Championship. All second round games will be played on Saturday, followed by the third round on Sunday to set up the semifinals and final next weekend, November 17-18 in Newport News, Va.
NICE TO MEET YOU: This will mark the very first meeting between Ithaca and Johns Hopkins. IC has sponsored field hockey since 1968, while Hopkins introduced the sport in 1975.
TWO STORIED PROGRAMS: Ithaca was a Division III powerhouse in the infancy of the organization. From 1980-1983, IC won 71 games and claimed the 1982 national championship and was the national runner-up in 1983.
Johns Hopkins has been one of the best field hockey programs in DIII over the past six years. The Blue Jays were the national runner-up in each of the past two seasons and reached the final four in 2018 and 2019. Since 2017, Hopkins has gone 111-17.
RECAP FROM ENDICOTT: It was a thriller in Beverly, Mass. on November 8 as the No. 24 Bombers bested No. 25 Endicott, 3-2, in overtime for IC's first NCAA win since 1997. Ithaca was the only road team to win an opening round game in the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday.
The Bombers opened the scoring with a penalty stroke from
Emma Garver in the seventh minute of action. Endicott knotted up the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute to end the first half.
IC went back ahead, 2-1, midway through the third quarter as
Catherine Papa scored off a pass from
Meara Bury and maintained that lead until the Gulls evened things back up at 2-2 early in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
The Bombers would prevail in the first overtime with less than three minutes to go as
Madeleine Goodman found
Natalie Descalso off a corner attempt to give IC the 3-2 win.
Alex Clough made seven saves in the win to improve to 14-5 on the year.
SCOUTING JOHNS HOPKINS: Hopkins has arguably played the most difficult schedule in Division III and has posted an 18-1 record. The Blue Jays have faced 10 nationally ranked opponents this season, and the 11th on Saturday against Ithaca, and the only loss came to then No. 13 York (Pa.), 3-1, on September 6.
JHU will bring a 16-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup. The Blue Jays have outscored their opposition this season, 58-11, and have only allowed five goals over their last 13 games.
JHU has seven players who have accumulated 10 or more points on the year, led by 26 (10 goals, 6 assists) from Siena Urbanski. Liz Falterer ranks second with 21 points on nine goals and three assists, while Gen Mehra has 18 points.
In goal, Alexis Loder is 13-0 in with a 0.44 GAA and .848 save percentage in 950 minutes played. Loder has not allowed a goal in more than 270 minutes of action.
WHAT'S NEXT?: The winner of this game will advance to the third round to play the winner for Salisbury and Williams on Sunday at 1 p.m.
