Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Ithaca College sculling team finished strong at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Saturday. The team raced in three events, the Quad, Single and Double finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
It was a warm October day and the water was flat for the morning of sculling races. The first event of the day for Ithaca was the Collegiate Single. The top sculler for the Bombers was graduate student,
Taylor Volmrich. Taylor clocked a time of 15:16.6, putting them in second place, just 5 seconds behind the single sculler from Dominican College (15:11.6). Senior,
Emma Hammel finished 11th, senior
Erin Trojan was 12th, junior
Zoe Paradis Stern was 15th and senior,
Avery LaVergne finished 19/19.
The next race for the Bombers was the Collegiate Double. Ithaca had five entries. It was tight between the Ithaca A and B boats, but in the end the B boat clocked a faster time over the 3.2K course. The winning boat was from Laval Rowing Club in Canada. Their time of 14:41.1, put them way out in front of the pack. Second through fourth were only separated by 2.5 seconds. The University of Rochester bested the Bombers with a time of 14:42.11, finishing 2nd. The Ithaca B boat of stroke,
Ashley Bailey and bow,
Samantha Gallagher were 14:43.1, finishing third and the Ithaca A boat of
Lily Babcock and
Kai Lincke were fourth with a time of 14:44.6. This race is about speed, but it also requires good steering and taking the best line to the finish, something that is not that easy when the athletes are facing backwards. The other three doubles of
Emma Anderson/
Chloe Croft,
Hope Oliveira/
Emmeline Robinson and
Melanie Heim/
Anna Capodilupo finished 7th, 8th and 9th respectively in a field of 19.
Eight of the scullers from the earlier two races, doubled into the quads for Ithaca's last race of the day. With a second and third place finish already, the Bombers were hungry for a win. The straight quad delivered, winning the race with a time of 12:38.3, just 2 seconds over Riverside Boat Club. The lineup was Babcock, Lincke, Volmrich and Hammel. Tufts College was third at 12:46.5. The Ithaca B boat of
Nicole De La Mota, Bailey, Gallagher,
Melanie Belmont and
Julia DiCostanzo finished 6th, with a time of 13:48.7, two seconds behind Trinity College. The C quad of
Caroline Hoskins, Trojan,
Skylar Moresi,
Emma Thorne and Oliveira came it 8th of the field of 13.
Coach
Beth Greene after the event remarked that she is proud of today's results and the way the team supported each other throughout the morning of racing. She was also excited to see more teams sculling and faster competition at the collegiate level.
The Bombers will return to action on Saturday, November 4 in their final event of the season back at the Cayuga Inlet for the Touchdown Regatta.
