ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College field hockey team had a successful home opener against St. John Fisher University on Sunday, Sept. 4, winning by the score of 4–1. The Bombers are now 2-0 early in the 2022 season.
The Bombers started a three-game homestand with a win against the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Cardinals, including shutouts in their previous six. Senior midfielder
Arla Davis and first year
Brenna Schoenfeld scored their first career goals, graduate student midfielder
Jacqueline Mirabile got her first goal of the year, and senior striker
Elizabeth Pillow tallied her second goal of the season. Graduate student goalkeeper
Macy Brandwein had a light day in net, stopping the only shot on goal she faced through the first three quarters.
The game started with immediate pressure from the Bombers, who dictated play in the first quarter. Davis' goal came early, just 3:46 into the frame before the South Hill Squad took the lead. Her unassisted goal was the lone goal of the quarter, but the Bombers had plenty of scoring opportunities as they outshot the Cardinals 8–0, with four on target, and one corner opportunity as well.
The Cardinals fought back in the second quarter, retaining possession for the majority of the frame, but they were unable to find the equalizer. Brandwein made her single save to keep the Bombers ahead in a low-event period.
The Bombers put the game out of reach after halftime, completely dominating play in the third quarter. They outshot St. John Fisher 11–0, putting nine on net, and also creating four corner chances. Just over six minutes into the second half, Schoenfeld got on the board with an assist from senior midfielder
Nicole Fortunato. Exactly two minutes later, Pillow found the back of the net with a deflection from a Schoenfeld point shot to put the Bombers up 3–0. Then, with just under two minutes left in the third, Mirabile deflected a shot from junior striker
Avery Moses.
Entering the fourth quarter, junior goalkeeper
Alex Clough made her season debut in net, subbing in for Brandwein. The junior was tested as the Cardinals registered five shots, including four on goal. Clough made a series of saves off of a corner attempt before a rebound shot was put past her with under three minutes left in regulation.
The Bombers outshot the Cardinals 20–6, led in shots on goal 13–5 and in corners 6–3. Ithaca College improves to 2–0 on the season returns to Higgins Stadium Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. to host the 2–0 Misericordia Cougars.
