Field Hockey Drops Two in a Row in Loss to SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team fell to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles Tuesday, losing 2–1. The Bombers are now 4–2 after winning their first four games of the year.

The loss snaps an eight-game win streak the Bombers held over the Golden Eagles, dating all the way back to the 2011 season. The Bombers put up a whopping 36 shots, including 32 on goal, while only ceding 11 shots and eight shots on goal. Junior midfielder Kiley Sullivan scored her first goal of the season off of one of the 11 corner chances the Bombers had. Graduate student goalkeeper Macy Brandwein made six stops in net. Sophomore strikers Emma Garver and Natalie Descalso and junior striker Sarah Devito all had at least five shots on goal, and 10 other Bombers recorded at least one shot on goal.

The first quarter saw solid chances from both sides, as Ithaca recorded six shots to Brockport's three, but Brockport had four corners to Ithaca's two. Sullivan nearly scored five minutes into the game, but it was turned away. Three minutes later, Devito had a quality scoring chance off a corner, but couldn't break through. Then, 12 minutes into the game, Sullivan had a shot stopped but followed her own rebound to put the Bombers up 1–0. However, the lead would not last long, as the Golden Eagles scored at the end of the quarter off of a corner to end the frame tied 1–1.

The Bombers came out of the break guns blazing, putting eight shots on goal in the first six minutes of the period. However, they were unable to find the go-ahead goal after their initial barrage of shots. Play settled until the final minutes of the quarter, but a corner and another shot on goal couldn't find the back of the net.

After halftime, Brockport's offense battled back and began trading chances with Ithaca's, recording three shots in the first seven minutes. Then, eight minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles scored what would be the game-winning goal. The Bombers didn't go down quietly, putting four shots on goal before the fourth and final frame.

Just a minute and a half in, the Bombers already had three chances to tie the game, but two went wide and the other was stuffed. Senior striker Elizabeth Pillow had two cracks at scoring with 10 minutes left, but both were saved before a foul gave the Golden Eagles possession. The Bombers kicked up their pressure at the end, getting three more shots on goal in the final four minutes, but the Golden Eagles were able to drain the clock over the last three minutes to ice the game. After losing their last two games, Ithaca's lost consecutive games for the first time since September 25, 2019.

The Bombers will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they kick off their in-conference schedule against Liberty League rival Union College at 1 p.m. at Higgins Stadium.
