ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team posted a convincing 19-9 victory over Cabrini University on the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Sunday at Higgins Stadium. Ithaca, now 17-3, moves onto the third round for the second consecutive season and will play the winner of No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College or Stevenson University next weekend at a site still to be determined.
The Bombers established early momentum with
Caroline Wise dominating the opening few draws and allowing them to net three-straight goals. The first was netted in the free position by
Lexi Kellish who scored her 11
th of the season. After a successful clear attempt,
Maizy Veitch made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal with 12:16 left in the first quarter. The final goal of the early scoring spurt for IC came on a nice combination play between Veitch and
Sydney Phillips who dished it to a cutting Veitch who ripped her shot past Sam Hamalak.
Cabrini made it 3-1 with 5:34 left in the first quarter when Dana Carlson scored an unassisted effort. However, her goal was then matched with two more from Ithaca including
Megan Motkowski scoring her 50
th goal of the season.
Madison Boutureira made it 5-1 in favor of the Bombers with her goal with under a minute left in the period.
Ithaca remained in the driver's seat as the first draw of the second quarter was won by and after getting into their offense, the Bombers made it 6-1 when Boutureira assisted on a goal that was scored by
Lauren White. The Cavaliers made the most of a man-up advantage when Dana Carlson scored her second of the afternoon. Ithaca immediately saw
Rachel Rosenberg win the ensuing draw and she weaved through the Cabrini defense using her elite speed to create an angle for a shot that went into the back of the net making it 7-2.
With 10:02 left in the second quarter the game was paused due to a lightning advisory within the area. Coming out of the break in action,
Megan Motkowski had her free position attempt saved by Sam Hamalak. At the 6:46 mark,
Lexi Held made an outstanding save denying an attempt from the free position from Ashley Tutzauer. The Bombers displayed good passing once again while running a set play as
Caroline Wise dished it to Veitch who put her team up 8-2. The score remained the same going into the halftime break as a last second shot attempt from Ithaca's Sydney Philips sailed wide of the cage as time expired.
Phillips ended up putting Ithaca up 9-2 just 55 seconds into the third period as she was fouled and then converted within the free position for her 40
th goal of the season. The Bombers than won the next two ensuing draws where two more free position goals were scored, this time by Veitch and Phillips. With her 69
th goal of the season, Veitch reset the single season program record in total points with 98 as she surpassed Bailey Herr '19, who totaled 97 points.
After the Cavaliers saw a goal netted by Olivia Little with 9:13 left in the third, it was almost instantly matched 40 seconds later with Philips scoring from the free position. Phillips again matched a Cabrini effort as Shea Neary scored as Phillips was fed from Wise who won the ensuing draw.
Philips would then score her fifth goal of the game as this time it was assisted by Veitch putting IC up 15-4.
Cabrini was fired up to begin the fourth quarter as they scored three unanswered goals including a nice individual effort that was cashed in by Dana Carlson making it 15-7 with 11:21 remaining. The Cavilers continued to display their no-quit attitude that powered them to their first round upset over No. 22 Haverford College. This time it was a one-two play from Olivia Little where she assisted a goal from Morgan McClintock making it 15-8. Ithaca cut into the visitor's momentum when Kellish scored her second goal of the contest as she earned an opportunity in the free position.
During the final five minutes of play four goals were scored including a pair from the Bombers as Ithaca advanced at the final whistle with the 19-9 final.
Held earned her 17
th win of the season with eight saves.
Phillips finished the day with six goals and one assist, while Veitch hit the 100-point mark on the season with four goals and two assists.
Wise dominated draw controls with 13 on the day as IC won 25 in the game.
