ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 5 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (ranked preseason No. 4) was scheduled to being its 2022 season on February 26 at No. 16 Brockport, but that game was postponed, thus pushing IC's official start to this Wednesday, March 2 at No. 12 Cortland. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at the Cortland Stadium Complex.
After a historic 2021 season, which ended in the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship with a 14-2 record, Ithaca is eager to return to action as one of the top teams in the nation. IC is also ranked No. 7 by Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine.
Ithaca, which finished the regular season with an 11-0 record (16-game winning streak dating to 5-0 shortened season in 2020), earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship after losing to William Smith (No. 6) in the Liberty League Championship, 17-13. The Bombers then won two games in the NCAA Tournament – 23-1 over Notre Dame (Md.) and 16-11 over then No. 2 Washington & Lee. IC's season came to a close with a loss to eventual national champion and current No. 1 Salisbury.
The Bombers sported a senior-heavy roster (12 players) in 2021, and due to COVID and eligibility rules, four of them return for this spring –
Madison Boutureira,
Megan Motkowski,
Alexa Ritchie and
Rachel Rosenberg – for their final season of eligibility as graduate students and fifth-year players. Rosenberg was tabbed a Preseason First-Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine as well.
The 2022 senior class of
Mallory Chamberlain,
Lauren White,
Gillian Hanson,
Lillian Matz and
Kelly Mehorter will look to step into larger roles this spring.
Mackenzie Farrar and
Kayla Howley make up the junior class for IC this season, while a deep group of sophomores return for their second season on South Hill –
Lexi Kellish,
Maizy Veitch,
Caroline Wise,
Maggie Mandel,
Sydney Phillips,
Liney Dutchyshyn,
Chloe Nordyke and
Lexi Held.
Head coach
Karrie Moore, now in her seventh season, and her newly appointed assistant,
Madison Mulligan, welcome 12 first-year players to the roster this spring –
Hayley Armstrong,
Kaitlyn Russell,
Gabby Rivera,
Elizabeth Green,
Olivia Puppo,
Tess Ferguson,
Kristina Rae,
Maddie Hall,
Julia Foster,
Halle Daino,
June O'Reilly and
Juliana Esposito.
After the game at Cortland, IC travels to FDU-Florham on March 5. IC's home opener is slated for March 12 against Scranton and its Liberty League opener takes place on March 19 at Higgins Stadium against RPI.
Between those two games the Bombers head to Babson the 16th during Spring Break.
The middle portion of Ithaca's schedule is broken up into three road and three home Liberty League matchups. Road games include St. Lawrence (March 25), Clarkson (March 26) and Rochester (March 30). The home contests feature Union (April 2), Bard (April 8) and Vassar (April 9).
Towards the end of the season, Ithaca battles No. 8 William Smith, the defending Liberty League Champions, in Ithaca on April 14 and then welcomes No. 4 St. John Fisher – a national semifinalist last spring – on April 22.
The Bombers will also play RIT on April 16, No. 23 Hamilton on April 27 and Skidmore on April 30 to close out the regular season.
