Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls to Rochester in Double OT, 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon at Fauver Stadium as the University of Rochester topped the Bombers, 1-0, in double overtime. With the setback, Ithaca is now 12-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Liberty League, while Rochester improves to 12-4 and 5-1, and controls its own destiny to host the Liberty League Final on November 6.

The Bombers dominated possession and statistical categories with a distinct 18-4 edge in shots and 12-4 advantage in corners, but Rochester made the most of its chances and won the game off a corner with 3:47 left in double overtime.

UR's insert from Maeve Fogarty went to the left wing and Karina Bridger snuck a shot past Macy Brandwein for the winning tally. IC had not trailed in contest since 3:18 into the third quarter at Brockport on September 20.

In the extra time, IC took eight shots and was awarded four corners but UR goalkeeper Kara Houston made five saves in overtime, including three point-blank shots from the Bombers.

Houston would finish the contest with nine saves, as three more occurred in the fourth quarter.

Neither team could get much going in the first quarter as IC or UR were able to record a shot.

With 12:45 remaining in the second quarter, IC intercepted a clearance pass to set up its first real scoring opportunity of the game, but the Yellowjacket defense held strong and allowed just one shot from Juliana Valli.

At the 10:47 mark in the third quarter, IC was awarded a corner, and scored, but the goal was called off for a dangerous play.

Six minutes later, with 4:37 to go, the Bombers picked up another corner, and Elizabeth Pillow's deflection was saved. The Bombers were able to earn two more corners in the third period but could not capitalize.

Ithaca would continue to press in the fourth quarter and produced numerous chances, but the UR back line stood strong for the final 15 minutes of play and sent the game into overtime.

IC outshot UR, 10-3, in regulation and owned an 8-3 advantage in corners.

The Bombers seemed poised to end the game with 7:25 to go in the first extra session as Pillow had a 1v1 chance, but her high shot attempted was snagged by Houston.

IC continued its offensive attack with three corners in a 1:30 span, but was once again turned away. With 2:20 remaining, Natalie Descalso found herself with an open opportunity, but Houston was up to the task once again.

Now in the second overtime, Morgan Mullen broke away with from the defense to set up another 1v1 chance, but a Yellowjacket defender tracked Mullen down and knocked the ball away. Seconds later, IC picked up a corner and had two shots saved, including one on the goal line from Mullen.

The Bombers had one final opportunity with 4:22 remaining as Mullen fired off another shot on target, but could not give IC the win.

Rochester countered and won the game less than 40 seconds later.

Ithaca will host William Smith on Sunday, October 23 at 1 p.m. for another crucial league game. An IC win gives the Bombers the No. 2 seed (potentially No. 1 with a UR loss to Union) and a home game on November 4, but a loss drops them to the third seed.
