Field Hockey Extends Winning Streak to Four with Win Over Keuka, 1-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team continued to roll on Wednesday evening, September 29 with a 1-0 shutout victory over Keuka College at Higgins Stadium. The Bombers improved to 7-2 on the season and posted their fourth consecutive victory, while Keuka fell to 1-5 with the loss.

Ithaca stifled the Wolves offensive attack all game and held Keuka to just one shot on goal compared to 14 of its own. The Bombers also had a staggering 23-to-3 shot attempt advantage and led 16-to-8 in penalty corner opportunities.

Although they did not light up the stat sheet, the Bombers offense did enough to keep Keuka on its heels throughout regulation. First year Emma Garver scored the only goal of the contest, which was the first of her career in an Ithaca uniform. Striker Morgan Mullen kept busy by registering an assist on the lone goal, while also having two shots on goal in the game.

Goalkeeper Alex Clough turned in another solid performance as she picked up her third straight win in the net this season. The sophomore recorded one save on just three shots faced.

IC looked sharp from the opening whistle, maintaining possession in Keuka territory for the vast majority of the first quarter. Garver jumpstarted the scoring for Ithaca early on, tallying a goal in the 13th minute. Mullen corralled the loose ball inside the center circle, whipped a crossing pass to Garver, who then tapped in the wide-open shot.

The Bombers nearly doubled up the advantage in the final minute of the first half when Natalie Descalso fired a shot that ricocheted off the left post of the goal and landed out of play.

Defense was the narrative of the third quarter, as neither unit was able to find the back of the net. The Ithaca offense continued to apply pressure, but Wolves goalkeeper Megan Makowski was a force in the cage, putting up four saves on six shots faced.

The final quarter was nearly a foil of the third with no points scored by either team. IC continued to dominate the field of possession by posting a shot on goal advantage of 5-to-0. A strong defensive performance from the Ithaca backline did its part to help the Bombers hold Keuka at bay.

Ithaca College returns to its home turf for a critical Liberty League matchup against the University of Rochester on Sunday, October 3. First whistle at Higgins Stadium is slated to take place at 2 p.m.
