Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking Loss on Penalty Stroke in OT to Vassar in LL Title Game

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team's bid to capture a postseason conference title came to a heartbreaking end as the Bombers fell to Vassar College, 1-0, on a penalty stroke in overtime of the Liberty League Championship contest at Higgins Stadium on Saturday. With the loss, Ithaca finishes out the season with a 14-5 record, while Vassar improves to 13-6 and earns the Liberty League's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship. The Bombers will find out sometime tomorrow if they are selected as an at-large team to the tournament.

Pace picked up into the first overtime period. With the schools battling seven-on-seven, the Bombers thought they won it all just minutes into the period when Jaqueline Mirabile ripped a shot into the back of the cage, unfortunately officials blew the sequence dead with a foul.

A yellow card was shown to Grace Ziehnert at the 63:39 mark over the overtime period, and shortly after on a breakaway chance for the Brewers, Macy Brandwein made an outstanding save as she flew out of the cage to deflect Ella Peral's shot attempt. The Brewers used the advantage and got another breakaway, but this time Brandwein was called for a foul, and on the ensuing penalty stroke, Haily Brigger placed it into the bottom right of the cage for the golden goal victory with 4:30 remaining in the first extra session.

The Bombers tallied 12 corner opportunities compared to Vassar's three but weren't able to make the most of those chances. Brandwein faced four shot attempts and finished with three saves.

IC was held without a shot for the first half but applied significant offensive pressure in the third quarter. IC earned seven corners and put four shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the cage. The Bombers earned four more corners in the fourth period and took three more shots.

Coming into Saturday's championship game, IC was shown 10 green cards and four yellows over 18 games. On Saturday, Ithaca was issued five yellow cards and three green cards, forcing the Bombers to play shorthanded for more than 26 minutes of the contest.
