SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Ithaca College field hockey team looked to achieve a feat it has not matched in nearly three decades when it returned to action on Saturday afternoon in a road contest at Susquehanna University. Unfortunately, IC was unable to maintain its perfect record on the season, falling 2-1 against the River Hawks. The loss drops IC's record to 5-1 on the season.
Scoring the lone goal for the Bombers was sophomore transfer
Morgan Mullen, who helped IC break the hosts' shutout with under a minute remaining in the game. Mullen scored her sixth goal of the season and third goal of the week with a fourth quarter tally late in regulation. Unfortunately, it was not enough to offset goals in the first and third quarters by the hosts in a 2-1 defeat.
IC entered the day hoping to make history, as the Bombers seeked a win that would match the program's best start since winning its first six games during the 1981 season. Although Ithaca held advantages in both shot attempts and shots on goal, the Bombers were unable to remain unbeaten on the season and match the program-best start from nearly three decades ago.
The opening quarter was tightly contested between the two sides. Both teams put together solid offensive chances, but it would be the River Hawks that converted first as time expired in the first quarter. Working on the team's third and final penalty corner of the quarter, the hosts found a breakthrough on Hunter Pitman's seventh goal of the season.
Susquehanna doubled the lead during the third quarter when Vivian Simone bested IC's senior keeper
Savanna Lenker on a penalty stroke. The scoring strike came with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter, while the result put Ithaca in its first multi-goal deficit of the season.
As was the case during IC's most recent comeback victory over Utica, the Bombers came out firing with an impressive fourth quarter. The Bombers outshot Susquehanna 4-to-0, while they held an identical 4-to-0 edge in penalty corners. Unfortunately, IC was unable to find a breakthrough until the waning moments, when Mullen was finally able to slot a shot past Susquehanna's Emily DiGaetano with 34-seconds remaining in regulation.
Lenker finished the contest with one save, while sophomore transfer back
Allison Egan chipped in a defensive save for the Bombers.
Ithaca will be back in action on Wednesday, September 18, when the Bombers return home for a big non-league matchup against SUNY Cortland at 7:00 p.m. IC will be looking to sustain its unbeaten record at home thus far in the young season.
