BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS! Softball Claims Liberty League Title With Win Over Rochester

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team won its second-straight Liberty League title on Saturday in thrilling fashion.
 
After seven and one-half innings of scoreless play, Ithaca finally put the game away in the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
Hannah Anderson led off with a single up the middle to put things in motion for the Bombers before Gabby Laccona reached on a fielder's choice play. Kaitlin Maniscalco, who was pinch running for Anderson, beat out the throw to second, however, to put a runner in scoring position for IC.
 
Danielle Mulvey then reached on a fielder's choice play, but Maniscalco once against beat out the throw to third to load the bases for the Bombers, paving the way for Haley White's game-winner. White sent a hard shot to Rochester's shortstop, giving Mansicalco time to score and end the game with a win.
 
Ithaca is now 26-7-1 on the season and will await its fate when the NCAA Selection Show airs on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m.
 
The Bombers struggled at the plate against Rochester, not recording a hit until the bottom of the seventh inning when Alex Wright doubled to left center. A double player, however, ended the inning and IC's scoring chances.
 
29889Ithaca's pitchers and defense got out of two tough innings, the top of the third and the eighth, in which the Yellowjackets had the bases loaded.
 
In the top of the third inning, Marissa Russo drew a walk to lead off the inning and stole second. Alexis Pope then drew a walk before Harleigh Kaczegowicz singled to shortstop to load the bases. Beth Fleming fielded a grounder for the final out the inning, however, to get out of a jam.
 
Rochester was once against knocking in the Ithaca's door in the top of the eighth inning.
 
Alizah Ayon singled down the right field line to get things going for the Yellowjackets. With two outs, Jen Carson drew a walk to advance Anne Marie Cortest, who was pinch running for Ayon. Jessica Conforti then singled up the middle, but senior Annie Cooney made a far throw to prevent any runs from scoring. Toni Anne Hahn lined out to Wright at first to end the inning.
 
White finished 1-for-1 on the day with the winning hit while Wright and Anderson both went 1-for-3.
 
Emily Holden pitched four innings of scoreless relief to pick up her eighth win of the year, striking out two in the process.
 
In the first four innings, Fleming allowed just two hits while striking out three before giving way to Holden. Fleming was also named Most Outstanding Performer of the tournament after picking up two wins. She struck out 19 batters in 18 innings of work and finished the weekend with a 0.00 ERA.
 
Ithaca will be back in action next weekend in the NCAA Regional round. The Bombers find out Monday where they will be playing.
