No. 19 Women's Lacrosse Blitzes Brockport in 23-14 Win

ITHACA, N.Y. - The No. 19 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team defeated The College at Brockport 23-14 March 20. By scoring 12 goals in the first half, the Bombers set the tone early and continued that momentum throughout the game. With the win, IC has an overall record of 4-2.
 
Brockport scored the first goal of the game when Heather Conklin scored from the right side to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0. Approximately seven minutes later, the Bombers got on the board from a goal by sophomore midfielder Caroline Grant. Grant sparked a 4-0 scoring run for IC as three more goals were scored within the next minute. Scoring was senior attacker Danika Wagener, sophomore midfielder Indira Varma and junior attacker Bailey Herr. Senior attack Allie Panara had two assists during the scoring run.
 
Brockport struck next and cut the Ithaca lead to 4-2 from another goal by Conklin. With another score a minute later by Jade Williams, Brockport trailed 4-3 with 17:47 remaining in the first half. The Bombers then went on a 6-0 scoring streak over the next 15 minutes.
 
Sophomore midfielder Megan Motkowski got things rolling for the Bombers with an unassisted goal to spark the offensive run. Following her was Panara who scored off a free position shot. Wagener scored her second goal of the game nearly three minutes later to make the score 7-3. Motkowski scored her second goal on the day, which was quickly followed by Wagener scoring again off an assist by senior attacker Elizabeth Rice. Capping off the run was sophomore midfielder Jacqui Hallack, who scored her first goal of the day to put IC up 10-3 with 3:24 remaining in the first half.
 
With under two minutes left in the half, Brockport went on a short scoring spurt of their own. The Golden Eagles scored three goals in 40 seconds to cut the Ithaca lead to 10-6. However, two quick goals to close out the half by the Bombers extended their lead to 12-6. Herr scored with 17 seconds left and Rice scored at the buzzer off an assist by Panara.
 
At the end of the first half, Ithaca had 23 shots compared to Brockport's 11. IC finished the half with 12 draw controls while the Golden Eagles only had six. Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Schade had two saves headed into halftime.
 
Hallack scored back-to-back goals to kick off the second half for the Bombers. She scored a minute and 13 seconds into the half and then again nearly three minutes later off an assist by Panara to make the score 14-6. The Golden Eagles then went on a 4-0 scoring run of their own, scoring four goals in approximately four minutes.
 
Starting things for Brockport was Chloe Kurst who went unassisted in her second goal of the day. Following her was Conklin with her third goal of the day, scoring on a free position shot. Jade Williams scored her third goal of the day off an assist by Kurst, who then turned around and scored her third goal on the day to cut the Ithaca lead to 14-10.
 
The Bombers then went on their third scoring run of the day when they scored their next four goals. Rice scored her second goal of the day to start the scoring run. Quickly following her was Herr who scored off a Wagener assist. Capping off the run were goals by Rice and Herr to make the score 18-10 with 13:14 remaining in the game.
 
Brockport went on to outscore the Bombers 3-1 over the next four minutes of the contest. Julie Carballo scored off an assist by Kurst to make the score 18-11. With a quick IC goal scored by Panara, the next two goals were scored by the Golden Eagles. Conklin scored her fourth goal of the day for Brockport and Allison Jennings scored her second to make the score 19-13.
 
IC answered with another scoring run to try and close out the game. Herr scored her fifth and final goal on the day with 9:14 remaining. Motkowski scored next, followed by Wagener and Hallack each scoring a goal as well. With six seconds remaining, Brockport's Jillian Babinsky scored, but the Bombers held on to the win.
 
Eight different Bombers scored throughout the game, which was led by Herr who finished with a season-high five goals. Finishing with four goals was Hallack and Wagener, which were season-highs for both players. Panara finished with a season-high four assists on the day.
 
On the defensive side, senior defender Reid Simoncini finished with a season-high 12 draw controls. Junior defender Becky Mehorter led the way in caused turnovers with four and had three ground balls while sophomore defender Molly Nodiff caused one turnover. Nodiff led the way for IC with five ground balls and sophomore midfielder Samantha Marsh finished the day with one ground ball. Schade helped protect the net as she finished with four saves.
 
The Bombers will travel to play against No. 17 St. John Fisher College at 1 p.m. March 23 in Rochester, New York.
