EWING, N.J. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team got a break from its Liberty League schedule on Saturday afternoon when it hit the road for a non-league match. Sadly the road did not get any easier, as the Bombers faced a nationally-ranked program for the third time over the past four matches in 35
th-ranked TCNJ. IC turned in one of its better performances of the season, but the Lions proved to be too much in the end in scoring the 7-2 victory to remain undefeated, while Ithaca fell to 3-8 on the year.
Saturday actually marked a better start for the Bombers than what has been the trend during its latest stretch of matches. For the first time since its trip to Florida, Ithaca was able to take a team point out of the doubles session. Although the Lions got on the board first quickly when Audrey Chen and Andrea Giacobbo posted an 8-1 win over IC's third-doubles grouping of
Parley Hannan and
Sam Brown, the Bombers struck back in the first-doubles bout. Juniors
Kathryn Shaffer and
Caroline Dunn posted on of the tandem's best wins of the season when they outlasted Grace Minassian and Maddy Stoner. In an exceptionally close battle, it was Dunn and Shaffer that scored a critical break and made it stand up in the 8-6 triumph. The win leveled the team score at 1-1.
Ithaca battled hard to take a lead into the singles session, but the Lions were able to swing momentum back in their favor with a second-doubles win. Sophomore
Brianna Ruback and junior
Taylor Ginestro played a strong match, but Alyssa Baldi and Sneha Rangu were able to come up on the winning end of a few big rallies to score the 8-5 decision.
TCNJ clinched the win early in the singles session, scoring wins at fourth-, third- and first-singles to stretch its lead to an insurmountable 5-1 margin. The closest battle was at third-singles, as Dunn was able to score five games, but lost 6-2, 6-3 to Brittany Reedman. TCNJ's Maddy Stoner posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over freshman
Sara Steinberg in the fourth-singles matchup, while Ruback had trouble with Rangu in the first-singles bout, falling 6-2, 6-0.
The Bombers lone win of the singles session came in a marathon contest between
Kathryn Shaffer and Grace Minassian. It was a remarkable rebound for Shaffer, who actually dropped the opening set 2-6, before rallying for the win. She forced a third set with a 7-5 win in the second frame, while she took the third-set super-breaker 10-4.
The Lions closed out the match with wins in the fifth and sixth flights. Hannan fell to Alyssa Baldi 6-1, 6-1, while Brown slotted in at sixth-singles, dropping a straight-setter to Audrey Chen 6-0, 6-0.
Ithaca returns to action on Sunday, April 15, when it travels to Troy, N.Y., to take on RPI in a pivotal Liberty League match. It will be a must-win match for IC's postseason hopes. Start time is tentatively scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
