Softball Cruises Past Clarkson

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team swept Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field, with both games lasting just five innings.
 
The Bombers put on an offensive show in the first game which led to a 12-0 victory, before coming out to win 9-1 in the second half of the doubleheader.

With the wins, Ithaca improves to 15-7 overall with a 6-2 mark in the Liberty League, while Clarkson falls to 5-18-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, starting with an Allie Colleran walk to lead things off.
 
Gabby Laccona followed that up with a bunt, which allowed Colleran to head to third to put runners on the corners. Laccona then stole second during the following at-bat to put herself in scoring position.
 
Both Colleran and Laccona scored for the Bombers on a wild pitch, putting IC up 2-0 early on.
 
Ithaca's defense quickly took care of Clarkson's batters in the bottom half of the inning. Haley Congdon struck out lead-off batter Hannah Bowen before both Summer Lancette and Bridget Woolley were forced into ground outs.
 
The top of the second inning proved to be the most offensively productive for the Bombers, as they scored six runs on six hits.
 
Ellie Murray led off with a double to right center before Annie Cooney singled to left field, allowing Murray to reach third base. Cooney then stole second to put herself in scoring position.
 
Colleran followed that up with a single to third, which load the bases for the Bombers.
 
Both Murray and Cooney scored on a Laccona double to left center, which put IC up 4-0 with no outs.
 
Vanessa Brown quickly added to the Bombers lead, sending a three-run homer over the left centerfield fence to give Ithaca a 7-0 edge with no outs.
 
The final run of the inning was driven in by an Alex Wright sacrifice fly, scoring Hannah Anderson who hit a double during her at-bat.
 
Clarkson picked up its first two hits of the game in the bottom of the second inning, on a Kat Plescow single to left and a Kyrstin Messier shot to left center. The Bombers, however, did not allow any runs to score, leaving two Golden Knights stranded.
 
Ithaca added its final four runs of the game in the top of the third inning.
 
Emily Bloom drew a two-out walk to start things off for the Bombers before heading to third on a Brown shot to left.
 
Both Bloom and Brown scored on a Haley Gaffney single to the pitcher, pushing IC's edge to 11-0. Gaffney scored the last run of the game on an Anderson double to right field.
 
Laccona finished 2-for-2 in game one, with two RBI, two runs scored, a double and a stolen base. Wright also went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
 
Brown went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, a homerun and a stolen base. Cooney finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, as well.
 
Congdon earned the win in the circle, pitching three innings for her fourth win of the season.

Ithaca started things off in the right fashion, as Colleran led off with a homerun to left field for the first run of the game.
 
Brown then reached based after being hit by a pitch, and Abby Shields followed that up with a single up the middle.
 
Wright sent a double to left center and advanced to third on the throw, which allowed Brown and Shields to score, giving IC a 3-0 edge after the first half inning.
 
Clarkson produced its first run of the day in the bottom of the first inning, starting with a Bowen walk to lead things off.
 
Lancette followed that up with a sacrifice bunt to move Bowen forward, before Woolley drilled a single to left. Bowen was then driven in on the next play by Plescow, who grounded out to Beth Fleming on the mound.
 
In the top of the third inning, Brown led off with a single to right field before Shields singled to center. Both Brown and Shields then advanced to second and third, respectively, on a passed ball to put two runners in scoring position.
 
Brown and Shields then were driven in on a Murray double to right center, giving IC a 5-1 lead with two outs. Murray was brought in on the next play, a Hannah Kimmel double to left center.
 
The Bombers put up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Colleran led off with a single to left before Laccona followed suit with a single to left of her own. Both Colleran and Laccona were driven in on a Shields sacrifice fly to right, giving the Bombers an 8-1 lead to end the inning.
 
Ithaca added the icing to the cake in the top of the fifth inning in the form of one more run. Wright led off with a double to right center before being driven in by Kimmel to push the IC edge to 9-1.
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Clarkson put together a rally which nearly extended the game past five innings.
 
Sam Mennig singled to center before Danielle Whitham singled to left. Lancette then drew a walk hich loaded the bases with two outs, but Fleming struck out Woolley, looking, to end the game in five innings.
 
Colleran went 3-for-3 against the Golden Knights in game two, with two runs, one RBI, a homerun and a double. Shields finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs while Wright went 2-for-3 which two RBI, one run and a double.
 
Fleming earned the win in the circle for the Bombers, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts.
 
The Bombers are back in action on Wednesday when they host Cortland for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. at Kostrinsky Field.
