Field Hockey Blanks Brockport 2-0 in Regular-Season Finale

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team hit the road for its final regular-season game on Saturday afternoon when it traveled to a soggy turf at Brockport's Dr. Linda and Class of '69 Stadium. The Bombers capped its 2018 schedule on a high note, notching their seventh shutout of the year in a 2-0 triumph. The victory improves IC's record to 12-6 on the year, tying for Ithaca's second highest win-total in a season in two decades of competition.

Conditions certainly were not optimal for a crisply contested game on Saturday. With temperatures hovering around 40-degrees and persistent rain throughout the afternoon, the players slogged through a hard-fought triumph over the Golden Eagles, IC's second victory of the week. The Bombers tallied a goal in each half, while the IC defense was stifling throughout in a comfortable 2-0 contest that was more lopsided than the final score line may have indicated.

Ithaca finished the day with lopsided advantages in almost all statistical categories. The Bombers out-paced Brockport 17-to-5 in shot attempts, 11-to-3 in shots on goal, and 10-to-3 in penalty corner opportunities. At the end of the day

The first half was complete domination for Ithaca, as the Bombers held a vast territorial advantage and did well to capitalize on it. IC racked up 12 shot attempts and eight corners in the first 35-minutes. The zone time advantage finally resulted in a breakthrough just before the halftime horn, as first-year Jacqueline Mirabile scored for the second consecutive game this week.

The score came on Ithaca's final penalty corner chance of the half with under two-minutes remaining. Senior striker Meg Dowd started the play with the insert to senior back Kimmy Briscoe at the left wing. She unleashed a hard slap shot that Brockport keeper Adriana DeDie initially stopped with the pad. The Bombers stuck with the play and kept working hard with Mirabile finding the rebound and pushing a shot over the goal line to put Ithaca on the board 1-0.

The Bombers doubled the advantage just under 10-minutes into the second half, again capitalizing on the penalty corner. It was Dowd that started the play, providing another clean insert to the point. The possession was worked to Mirabile along the perimeter of the arc and she unleashed a wicked shot that fellow first-year Anna Parrish redirected on the way to the cage. The ball fluttered and hit pay dirt in the bottom corner of the cage to up the advantage to 2-0 with 25:12 left in regulation.

The Bombers did not rest on their laurels, continuing to hold the lion's share of possession during the remainder of regulation. Although IC was not able to add onto the lead, they played sharp despite the challenging conditions, turning in impressive performances at all three levels of the field.

Junior goalie Savanna Lenker finished the contest with three saves to pick up her 12th victory and seventh clean sheet of the campaign. The effort further helped her dazzling save percentage that ranked as one of the top in the nation entering the weekend.

Ithaca will now await a postseason call, as it is under consideration to participate in the ECAC Tournament. Official selections for the postseason event are set to be announced in early November.
