Softball Drops 4-0 Decision to No. 6 St. John Fisher in E8 Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team was shutout by No. 6 St. John Fisher College, 4-0, in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament on Saturday at Kostrinsky Field. With the loss, Ithaca is now 29-9 on the season and moves to the elimination bracket. The remainder of the tournament on Saturday was postponed due to continuous rain, and if the weather cooperates, play will resume at 9 a.m.

The opener on Saturday was moved up to 9 a.m. in an attempt to beat the weather, but fog rolled in around 8:30 a.m. and delayed the start. Shortly after that, a steady rain began to fall and pushed back the start time to 11 a.m.

Fisher produced the first scoring opportunity of the game with a lead-off double in the top of the second, but two foul outs and a strikeout looking ended the threat.

The Cardinals got on the board in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice bunt and error. Fisher's runner on first advanced two bases on the sacrifice and then scored on an errant throw to third base.

Fisher added to its lead in the sixth with a lead-off solo home run to left field and then pushed home two more runs to make the score 4-0. The Cardinals' third run of the game came on a single to right field and another crossed the plate on a bunt.

Ithaca broke up the no-hit bid for Fisher's Lindsey Thayer on a one-out single up the middle by sophomore Vanessa Brown. The game ended on a caught stealing at second base. Thayer struck out 15 batters in the game and walked one.

Sophomore Haley Congdon took the loss in the circle for Ithaca in five innings pitched. Congdon allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks. She also struck out four batters.

The second game of the day between Nazareth and Stevens was postponed in the bottom of the first inning with one out. Stevens was leading, 1-0, at the time of the postponement.
