Bombers Extend Win Streak to Eight Games With Sweep of Oneonta

Congdon Records First Career No-Hitter in Game 1; Wright Hits Walk-off Double in Game 2

Ithaca, N.Y. – Sophomore Haley Congdon threw her first career no-hitter in the first game, recording Ithaca's first since 2011 and the program's 16th overall. The performance helped the Bombers to a 5-0 win in the first outing of the doubleheader.
 
Ithaca pushed its win streak to eight games after sweeping the Red Dragons, winning the second game 2-1 on a walk-off by sophomore Alex Wright. With the two wins, the Bombers earn their 24th straight 20-win season.  
 
Game 1
Ithaca took the early lead over the Red Dragons in the bottom of the first and would not look back, shutting out Oneonta in the first game thanks to Congdon's no-hitter.
 
Oneonta got its first baserunner of the game after a two-out walk, but Congdon struck out the final Red Dragon of the frame to end the threat.
 
The Bombers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning, giving Ithaca the early 3-0 lead. All of Ithaca's offense came with two outs, beginning with sophomore Vanessa Brown's single to left field. Classmate Wright followed up Brown's single with one of her own, advancing Brown to third. Freshman Shannon Grage pushed Ithaca's first two runs across, scoring Brown on a single to centerfield, while Wright advanced to home on a throwing error by the centerfielder.
 
Sophomore Hannah Anderson added the Bombers' final run of the inning, The sophomore singled to left field, allowing Grage to score, while advancing to third herself on a throwing error. Oneonta forced sophomore Annie Cooney into a groundout to end the frame with Anderson stranded on third.
 
The Red Dragons garnered two walks in the top of the second inning with one out, but back-to-back swinging strike outs from Congdon keep Ithaca ahead 3-0.
 
Oneonta forced Ithaca into a three-and-out inning in the bottom of the third, causing a groundout, pop out and foul out.
 
Katie O'Gorman kicked off the top of the third inning with a four-pitch walk and advanced 60 feet on Selena Ruiz's sacrifice bunt. The Bomber defense forced a pop out and a fly out to end the frame and hold onto their 3-0 lead.
 
The Bombers had two baserunners on in the bottom of the third with one down, but a line out and a groundout left them stranded. Brown made her way on base thanks to an error by Oneonta and Wright followed with a single through the right side. With runners on first and second, Oneonta shut down Ithaca's bats to end the threat.
 
Ithaca added another run in the bottom of the fourth, extending its lead to 4-0 over Oneonta. Sophomore Alex Kimmel got on base after being hit by a pitch and came around to score from first on Colleran's standup double to left center field.
 
Oneonta went three-and-out to start the fifth inning, while Ithaca garnered one baserunner in the bottom of the frame. The Red Dragons recorded three groundouts after Brown reached with a leadoff walk.
 
The Bombers forced another three-up, three-down inning for Oneonta in the top of the sixth, which included Congdon's sixth strikeout of the game.
 
Ithaca pushed across its final run in the bottom of the sixth inning, after Cooney received a leadoff walk. She stole second and advanced to third on freshman Abby Shields' groundout. Sophomore Nikkey Skuraton registered a bloop single to right field, allowing Cooney to come around to score and give Ithaca a 5-0 lead.
 
Congdon struck two more Red Dragons out in the top of the seventh to secure the victory and keep her no-hitter intact.
 
Ithaca recorded seven hits in route to its five runs scored, led by Wright with two hits. Anderson, Grage, Skuraton and Colleran each pitched in an RBI. Congdon went the distance in her no-hitter, pitching a shutout with eight strikeouts.  
 
Game 2
Wright delivered in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Bombers, recording a walk-off double to secure the 2-1 victory over Oneonta.
 
Ithaca got out to a good start in the top of the first inning, with freshman pitcher Emily Holden recording her first strikeout of the day along with two groundouts to force Oneonta into a three-and-out frame.
 
The Bombers struck early once again, scoring one run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Fleck doubled down the left field line with one out in the frame and came around to score on Wright's two-out single up the middle.
 
Oneonta garnered a two-out walk in the top of the second inning, but freshman Rebecca DiSerio threw out Rebecca Wentink as she attempted to steal second base, ending the inning.
 
The Red Dragons forced Ithaca into a three-up, three-down bottom of the second to keep the score at 1-0, Bombers.
 
The Red Dragons had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the third, but Ithaca cut down the lead runner at home on a groundball to Brown, ending the frame. Jade Meehan recorded the first hit of either game for Oneonta, registering a two-out infield single to the pitcher. O'Gorman followed up with her own single, this time to right field, giving the Red Dragons two runners in base. Oneonta put on a double steal, advancing the runners to second and third for Ruiz, but the Bombers forced her to put the ball in play to Brown, who threw out Meehan at home.
 
Ithaca recorded one baserunner in the bottom of the third, thanks to Colleran's standup double to right center, but two consecutive groundouts ended the inning with no damage by the Ithaca bats.
 
Oneonta knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on Wentink's double down the right field line, scoring Lauren Sabatino from second. Sabatino reached on an Ithaca fielding error and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Bombers. Ithaca registered the final out on a fly out, limiting any more Red Dragon runs.
 
The Bombers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but could not push any runs across, with two runners being cut down at home plate. Wright doubled to kick off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at home on Grage's fielder's choice. Holden singled on the next play and Cooney reached base on a dropped fly ball by centerfield, loading them up. Grage was thrown out at home on Ellie Murray's fielder's choice and Skuraton grounded out to end the frame.
 
Oneonta recorded two consecutive hits in the top of the fifth inning, but back-to-back fly outs ended the frame with the game still knotted at one.
 
Colleran smoked a ball up the middle to start the bottom of the fifth inning, but was thrown out attempting to steal second base. Brown singled to centerfield during the next at bat, advancing to third after a fielding error by the centerfielder. With a runner at third and two outs, Oneonta forced Wright to groundout to end the inning with Brown stranded.
 
Oneonta kicked off the top of the sixth inning with a hard hit single up the middle by Sabatino, but she was forced out at second on Cori McFall's fielder's choice during the next at bat. Holden and the Bomber defense caused the Red Dragons to pop out and line out to end the frame with a runner stranded.
 
Grage singled to centerfield to start the bottom of the sixth inning and Holden followed up with a hard hit single to third to give Ithaca runners on first and second with no outs. Oneonta forced the Bombers' lead runner out at third on Cooney's fielder's choice, but both Ithaca runners were able to advance on Shields' groundout during the next at bat. The Red Dragons ended the inning by forcing freshman Haley Gaffney into a groundout.
 
Oneonta recorded a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning, but the Bombers recorded three straight outs to end the frame with the game still tied at one.
 
The Bombers secured the victory with a Wright walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Brown from second. Brown reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wright then smoked a ball to centerfield to score Brown and win the game, 2-1.
 
Ithaca finished with 11 hits, led by Wright who recorded three hits and both RBI. Colleran, Fleck and Grage pitched in two hits apiece as well. Holden went the distance, allowing one run on seven hits to earn her eighth win.
 
The Bombers are back in action tomorrow as they travel to take on Cortland in a non-conference battle. Games are slated for 3 and 5 p.m. Live stats and video are available at athletics.ithaca.edu.
