CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Ithaca College softball program wrapped up its spring trip to California with a sweep of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Friday afternoon by scores of 5-0 and 6-3 in Claremont, Calif. With the victories, Ithaca will return to New York with a 6-4 record, while C-M-S falls to 6-10 on the year.
In the Game One victory, hall of fame head coach
Deb Pallozzi won her 800th career game. Pallozzi has won 796 games while at Ithaca, to go along with five victories as the coach of RPI in 1986-87. She is now just four wins shy of 800 as the coach of the Bombers.
Game One: Ithaca 5, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0
The Bombers' offense was held at bay over the first four innings as they were unable to produce a hit. Ithaca's fortune changed in the fifth inning, however, as the Bombers pushed two runs across and then three more in the sixth inning to claim Game One.
In the fifth inning, sophomore
Alex Wright led off with a double and moved up to third on a wild pitch during freshman
Abby Shields' at bat, who would eventually walk. Sophomore
Hannah Anderson drove both runners in with a double down the leftfield line to give Ithaca a 2-0 lead.
The Bombers tacked on three more runs in the sixth on two hits. Wright singled in senior
Gabbie Litz after she reached on a walk, and then Anderson earned her third and four RBIs of the game on a single to plate Wright and junior
Emily Bloom.
Sophomore
Haley Congdon tossed her second straight complete game and first shutout of the season inside the circle. Congdon surrendered just four hits over seven innings and struck out four batters.
Game Two: Ithaca 6, C-M-S 3
Ithaca used a four-run first inning to complete the sweep of the Athenas on Friday. In the Bombers' first at bat of the contest, Anderson got things going with an RBI single to right, which plated Shields. Bloom followed with a base hit to center to bring in Wright, and then freshman
Frankie-Ann McCauley drove in Anderson and Wright with an opposite field base hit.
C-M-S got on the board in its half of the third, but the Bombers responded with two runs in the fourth to make the score 6-1 on a two-run single by sophomore
Vanessa Brown with junior
Allie Colleran and sophomore
Nikkey Skuraton in scoring position.
The Athenas chipped away with a run in the fifth and sixth innings, and then put two runners on in the seventh with two outs. A call to the bullpen brought Congdon back into action and she closed the door with a pop out for her second save of the season.
Brown went 2-for-3 at the plate and stole a base, while McCauley was 2-for-2 with a walk. Bloom also swiped a bag in a 1-for-3 effort at the dish, and freshman
Rebecca DiSerio stroked a pinch hit double for her first collegiate hit.
Freshman
Emily Holden earned her second win of the season in five innings of action with four strikeouts. Holden allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and five walks. Fellow freshman
Shannon Grage tossed 1.2 innings in relief before giving way to Congdon.
Ithaca is scheduled to host SUNY Oneonta on March 23 for a doubleheader at Kostrinsky Field.
