Softball Earns First Wins of 2017 with Sweep of Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Ithaca College softball program completed a sweep of the University of Redlands on Sunday, 7-4 and 6-5, at the Field of Dreams in Redlands, Calif. Ithaca is now 2-2 early on in 2017, while Redlands drops to 4-12 on the year.

Game One: Ithaca 7, Redlands 4

The Bombers plated two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI double off the bat of sophomore Vanessa Brown, which allowed junior Allie Colleran and sophomore Nikkey Skuraton to score. Colleran led off the game with a single and Skuraton reached on a fielder's choice.

Redlands loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with no outs, but sophomore Hailey Congdon got out of the jam with a fielder's choice, strikeout and pop out.

Ithaca tacked on two more runs in the second with a run-scoring double from Colleran with senior Jessie Fleck on base. Colleran moved up to third on the play and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Skuraton to make the score, 4-0, in favor of the Bombers.

The Bombers continued to score in the third inning, as freshman Frankie-Ann McCauley drove in fellow freshman Abby Shields with a base hit up the middle to give Ithaca a 5-0 cushion.

Two more runs crossed for the Bombers in the fourth on a sac fly from sophomore Alex Wright that brought in Skuraton, and then crossed the plate on an illegal pitch.

Redlands got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run and then pulled to within three at 7-4 after a bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning, but that was as close as the Bulldogs could get.

Congdon picked up the win in five strong innings pitched. She gave up just one run and scattered five hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Emily Holden tossed the final two innings of relief.

Brown went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Colleran was 2-for-3 with a double. Shield batted 1-for-3 with a run scored and stolen base.

Game Two: Ithaca 6, Redlands 5

After consecutive 1-2-3 innings on offense to start the nightcap, Ithaca plated a run in the third on a single by Shields with Skuraton in scoring position, who reached on a base hit.

The Bombers broke the contest open with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. After a potential run was thrown out at the plate with the bases loaded, Colleran stroked a two-run single up the middle to bring in sophomore Ellie Murray and freshman Shannon Grage. Brown then stepped up to the plate and drove in junior Emily Bloom and Colleran.

Grage started in the circle for the Bombers and tossed 3.1 no hit innings to begin the game. After the first out was retired in the fourth, a Redlands batter broke up with no-hit bid with a double, but the shutout stayed intact as she was thrown out at the plate on the ensuing plate appearance.

Redlands would get on the board, however, with three runs in the fifth inning on three straight hits to cut Ithaca's edge to 5-3. In the sixth, the Bulldogs tied the game up at 5-5 with a two-run double after Grage was relieved by junior Payton Cutting.

Ithaca posted the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly from freshman Haley Gaffney with Fleck on third base. Fleck entered the inning as a pinch runner and immediately stole second. She then moved up to third on a wild pitch.

Redlands threatened in its last at bat as two runners reached base on walks. With two outs, Congdon relieved Holden and forced the next batter to fly out to right for the final out.

Holden picked up the win in 1.2 innings pitch, while Congdon earned the save. Grage surrendered four runs on five hits over five innings.

Colleran went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with a run scored and two RBI, while Shields and Grage each tallied two hits.

The Bombers head to the University of La Verne tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. PDT (4 Eastern) in La Verne, Calif.
