SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The No. 16 Ithaca College women's swimming and diving team saw program and pool records fall in its wake, as the Bombers kept its perfect record intact with a 173-121 victory over Union College at the Alumni Gym Pool on Saturday afternoon. The win improved Ithaca's record to 15-0 heading into the final tune-up, before the 2017 UNYSCAS Championships next month.
Highlighting the day's action was junior diver
Katie Helly. She shattered the program record for six-dive score in the three-meter springboard, posting a score of 323.55. IC also set a new pool record on the day, as
Grace Ayer, Sam Reilly, Jackie Pecze and
Lake Duffy combined for 1:49.53 in the 200-yard medley relay.
In total, the Bombers posted first-place finishers in 10 events, particularly excelling in the diving, freestyle sprints, breaststroke, and the backstroke events.
Ayer had an excellent day in addition to her leg in the pool record setting 200 medley relay. She swept the backstroke events, posting a time of 59.99 to run away with the 100-yard event and a time of 2:09.17 to narrowly edge Union's Christina Belforti by .04 in the 200-yard race. She also swam the opening leg of Ithaca's first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team that took first place.
Duffy swept the freestyle sprints, dominating in taking both the 50-yard and 100-yard races. She posted a 24.48 in the 50-yard win, while she swam the 100 in 53.84 to best the field by 1.77 seconds.
The Bombers also swept the breaststroke races to gain separation from the Dutchwomen in the overall score. Sam Reilly blew away the field by 4.72 seconds in take first in the 100-yard event with a time of 1:08.01.
Hannah Parbst took first in the 200-yard race with a time of 2:34.36.
Casey Koenig added a runner-up showing behind Parbst with a time of 2:36.87.
Ithaca also showed off its depth of skill in the diving well. Behind Helly's impressive showing,
Alyssa Wishart took second with an excellent six-dive score of 306.97, while
Lindsey Suddaby took third in the three-meter board with a score of 275.80. Suddaby narrowly edged Helly in the one-meter board with a score of 281.85, while Helly went second in 278.15.
Adding runner-up performances were
Emily Altchiler, who posted a time of 2:21.12 in the 200-yard individual medley and a 2:18.78 in the 200-yard butterfly. Pecze swam a 1:01.57 to take second in the 100-yard butterfly.
Brenna Dowd marked runner-up finishes in both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events with times of 5:29.82 and an 11:12.57, respectively.
The Ithaca women return to the pool on Saturday, February 11, when the Bombers return to the Ithaca College Athletics & Events Center for the 2017 Ithaca Invitational. Action begins at 1:00 p.m.
