Sixth Inning Rally Propels Softball to E8 Title Game

ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked and top-seeded Ithaca College softball team rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to overtake the second-seeded St. John Fisher College Cardinals on Saturday on the second day of the 2016 Empire 8 Championship at Kostrinsky Field.  With the win, Ithaca, which is now 31-7 on the season, advanced to Sunday's championship game where it will face St. John Fisher again after the Cardinals defeated Alfred, 8-0, in game five of the championship.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

ITHACA 4, ST. JOHN FISHER 1

Ithaca's Laura Quicker and Fisher's Lindsey Thayer were locked in a pitcher's duel through four innings as neither allowed a runner to cross home plate until the Cardinals blasted a lead-off homerun in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead.

After failing to drive in lead-off double in the home half of the fifth frame, the Bombers responded in a big way in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on four hits.  Jessie Fleck led off with a hard-hit slap single to third base and moved all the way to third after a rushed throw by Fisher's infield rolled into right field.  The next hitter, Allie Colleran, laid down a bunt and reached first on a fielder's choice before taking second when she caught the Cardinals asleep on the play.  With runners on second and third, freshman Vanessa Brown delivered a two-run shot up the middle to give Ithaca a 2-1 lead before Kelly Robichaud drove a Thayer fastball deep over the right-center field fence to make it 4-1 in the Bombers' favor.

The Cardinals sent their 7-8-9 hitters to the dish in the bottom of the seventh, but Ithaca shut the door on any comeback attempt after retiring the side in order to advance to tomorrow's championship round.

Quicker, who made her 19th start of the season, lasted four innings of one-run ball before being lifted by Allison Macari.  Macari (13-3) was credited with her 13th win of the season after tossing three innings.  She surrendered just one hit and did not allow a run.

The win marked the second time this season that Ithaca saddled Fisher's ace with a loss after tagging her for seven runs in a 7-0 win back on April 24.  Thayer's season mark moved to 21-4 with the loss.
