ITHACA, N.Y. – Kelly Robichaud blasted a game-winning walk-off solo homerun in the seventh inning of the second game of a doubleheader against SUNY Cortland on Wednesday as the nationally-ranked Ithaca College softball team swept the Red Dragons at Kostrinsky Field. With the wins, Ithaca, which is ranked 23rd in the latest national polls, has now won eight straight and 15 of its last 16 games. The Bombers are now 24-6 overall while the Red Dragons fall to 20-8 on the season.
ITHACA 2, CORTLAND 0
In the opening game, Ithaca and Cortland each swapped zeros through two innings before the Bombers broke through with a run in the third despite not getting a hit to take a 1-0 lead.Â
Emily Bloom and
Nikkey Skuraton each earned their way on base after drawing back-to-back walks before
Vanessa Brown reached on a fielder's choice. With two on and two out,
Casey Gavin drew a walk to load the bases but the Red Dragons mistakenly threw the ball into centerfield as Bloom scurried home on the play to stake the home team to a 1-0 lead.
The Bombers would double their advantage in the next inning when
Hannah Anderson jacked her fifth homerun of the season to put Ithaca up 2-0.
The Red Dragons would put two runners on in both the fifth and seventh innings, but would be unable to do anything more as senior pitcher
Laura Quicker kept Cortland guessing at the plate en route to her 12th win of the season (12-2).
Quicker, who pitched her ninth complete game and fourth shutout of the season, scattered just six singles over seven innings of work. She struck out five and walked a pair in the win.
ITHACA 1, CORTLAND 0
The nightcap featured a pitchers' duel as neither team was able to put a run on the board through six innings of play.
In the top of the seventh, Cortland had runners at second and third with just one out, but
Allison Macari wiggled out of trouble after notching two big outs including a strikeout to end the threat.
With the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Robichaud ended things with one swing as the senior catcher blasted a homer far beyond the left-centerfield fence to lift Ithaca to a 1-0 win and a sweep of Cortland.
Macari picked up her fourth straight win in the process after tossing seven shutout innings. The Stamford, Conn. native allowed just two hits and struck out four in her seventh win of the season (7-3). Over her last four starts in the circle, Macari has surrendered just two runs over 27.0 innings of work.
The Bombers will return to conference play at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they host Stevens Institute of Technology at Kostrinsky Field. Ithaca will honor its five seniors at the conclusion of the doubleheader.
