BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout victory on the road at SUNY Brockport. The win evens the Bombers record at 7-7 heading into its final contest of the regular season this coming weekend.
Â
A pair of late goals by
Michaela Donohue in the final five minutes of regulation proved to be the difference in the contest. The junior forward finished off a pair of feeds from fellow forward,
Colleen Keegan-Twombly, to account for all the scoring in the 2-0 win. It marked the third straight game Donohue found the back of the net.
Â
Any lead would have sufficed for Ithaca, as senior keeper,
Katie Lass, marked her third shutout of the year. She finished with eight saves to bring her career total to 475. Lass currently sits nine saves shy of tying Rebecca Ryder '89 (484) for third on the program's all-time saves list.
Â
The contest looked to be destined for extra time, as the two sides battled in a tightly contested tilt. There was no lack of offense despite frigid cold temperatures and a gusty breeze throughout the game. The Bombers earned nine penalty corners in the opening half and fired six shots on goal during the opening 35 minutes of play, but were unable to find a breakthrough against Brockport keeper, Sarah Beam, and some stout defending from the Golden Eagles' backs. Beam finished with 10 saves, while Brockport amassed six defensive saves in the contest.
Â
Ithaca continued to push the pace in the second half with 11 more shot attempts in the frame. The score remained deadlocked at zero heading into the final minutes of the contest, when IC finally found the breakthrough.
Â
Holding possession in the attacking third of the field, Keegan-Twombly was able to sneak a pass through a big scrum in front of the Brockport cage to Donohue. The latter slid a shot into the bottom corner of the goal to give IC a 1-0 lead with exactly five minutes remaining.
Â
Donohue doubled the lead with just 2:30 remaining. Taking a feed from Keegan-Twombly, she streaked down the right flank and slipped a sharp angle shot past the Brockport keeper to effectively seal the win. The two-goal effort was the second of Donohue's career. Coincidentally, the other multi-goal game also came against Brockport in a 5-0 win at Higgins Stadium last season.
Â
Keegan-Twombly registered her second multi-assist game of the season. The two-point effort brings her season total to 31, just two points off her previous career high of 33.
Â
Kaylou Stoddard and
Hannah Gerber each marked a defensive save for the Bombers in the contest.
Â
Ithaca concludes the season with a trip to Elmira for a 1:00 p.m. clash on Saturday, October 29. IC can take a step towards clinching a berth to the postseason with a victory over the Soaring Eagles.
