FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College swimming and diving team began its 2016-17 season with a pair of wins as the Bombers defeated The College at Brockport, 226-72, and host SUNY Fredonia, 236-64, as part of a tri-meet inside Steele Hall Natatorium.Â
Ithaca took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay as
Samantha Reilly,
Grace Ayer,
Cassie Papaleo and
Lake Duffy finished first overall with a winning time of 1:52.99.Â
Justine Wantz,
Jaclyn Pecze,
Hannah Parbst and
Erin Hackett took second in 1:56.35.
The Bombers also took the top two spots in the 1000 free as
Brenna Dowd and
Miranda Wingfield finished first and second, respectively. Dowd won after touching the wall in 11:23.07 while Wingfield completed the event in 11:28.38.
In the 200 free, Ayer beat seven other competitors after posting a top time of 2:00.09 while Wantz collected a win in the 50 backstroke in 29.57. Ayer would also post a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.36 and the 100 IM in 1:00.98.
Ithaca continued to rack up top finishes with Reilly winning the 50 breaststroke with a mark of 30.61 and
Ashley Warren finishing in second place at 33.10. Reilly would go on to claim the top spot in the 100 backstroke after finishing two seconds ahead of the competition in 1:02.88.
Papaleo won the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.79 while
Kelsey Jepsen finished close behind in second place after finishing in 1:03.02. Alexandra Estanislau finished in third place and
Zoe Vadney rounded out the top four in the event.
Duffy would help Ithaca's cause with a win in the 50 free (24.80) and a second place finish in the 100 free (54.37).
In the 500 freestyle,
Cat Tompkins took the top overall spot in 5:34.25. Teammate
Nilza Costa earned a second place finish with a time of 5:36.00.
The Bombers took the top three spots in the 50 fly with Pecze, Jepsen and
Josie Berman finishing first, second and third, respectively.
In the deep end,
Nickie Griesemer finished in second place on the 3-meter board with 273.45 and would take fourth on the 1-meter.Â
Katie Helly finished in third place on the 3-meter while
Lindsey Suddaby earned a fifth place finish on the 1-meter.
Ithaca will open the home portion of its schedule at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute inside the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion. Â
