ITHACA, N.Y. – A 10-goal second half led visiting #8 Cortland (6-1) past Ithaca (2-2), 17-7, on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.
After leading 7-5 at intermission, Cortland tallied the game's final 10 goals to claim its fourth consecutive victory.
Ithaca was led by seniors
Ali DeCirce (Binghamton/Binghamton) and
Katie Hurley (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) with two goals each, while sophomore
Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow), sophomore
Michelle Avery (Brien McMahon/Norwalk, Conn.) and senior
Emily Finn (Bishop-Brady/Concord, N.H.) each recorded one score. Three Bombers collected three ground balls each, while junior
Nicole Borisenok (Albany Academy for Girls/Watervliet) forced a team-best two turnovers.
Cortland opened scoring just two minutes into action before
Rivas and
Hurley responded with Ithaca scores to put the Bombers ahead at 25:25. Cortland went unassisted at 20:55 prior to the Bombers again claiming the lead, 3-2, on an unassisted
Hurley goal at 16:52.
Cortland rattled off three straight free position goals to lead 5-3 with 6:43 left in the first period before
Avery got on the board. The teams went goal-for-goal as Cortland scored at 3:11,
DeCirce went unassisted at 2:33, and the Red Dragons closed out the half with a score at 1:16 to lead 7-5 at the break.
Ithaca looked to continue challenging as
Finn and
DeCirce posted back-to-back goals to knot the game at 7-7 with 26 minutes remaining in the game. Though, Cortland went on to score the game's final 10 goals for a commanding 17-7 victory.
Sophomore
Jess Worthman (Hauppauge/Commack) suffered the loss in goal, making 10 stops for the Bombers.
Cortland narrowly outshot Ithaca, 30-27, scooped up 24 ground balls to the Bombers' 18 and held a 14-12 edge on draw controls.
The Bombers will next host Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
