MEN’S LACROSSE (10-1, 4-1 Empire 8): April 9 vs. Union; April 12 at Hartwick
The sixth-ranked Bombers won a pair of Empire 8 games last week, beating Utica 16-6 and rallying to top #11 Nazareth 10-9. Senior Matt Nelligan (Pingree School/Rowley, Mass.) recorded three goals in the Utica win, moving him into second on Ithaca's all-time goal scoring list with 147 career goals. Utica led 3-2 after the first quarter before the Bombers stormed back to take a 7-4 lead at halftime. Ithaca then outscored Utica 9-2 in the second half for the win. Senior Craig Lepiane (West Irondequoit/Rochester) tied a career-high, scoring five goals and one assist. Classmate Logan Bobzien (Arapahoe/Centennial, Colo.) tallied a goal and five assists in the game. Junior Alec Seifert (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) recorded two goals and sophomore Nic Heckman (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.) added a goal and two assists. Freshmen Michael Hennessy (Owen J. Roberts/Spring City, Pa.) and Kevin Ferris (Onondaga/Marcellus) picked up their first collegiate points, each scoring a goal. Freshman Michael Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) and junior Mike Giunta (B. Reed Henderson/West Chester, Pa.) each added a goal for the Bombers. Senior Brandon Rose (Rush-Henrietta/Rochester) led the team with 12 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalie Ben Connery (Homer/Homer) made five saves for his seventh win of the season. Ithaca rallied to beat Nazareth as junior Tim Pfeffer (Penfield/Penfield) scored with eight seconds remaining in the game, his first goal in five games. Nazareth opened the game with three unanswered goals and lead Ithaca 5-2 at the half. The Golden Flyers stretched their lead to 7-2 before Ithaca scored eight of the next 10 goals, including a man-up goal by Siefert at 3:34 in the fourth to tie the game before Pfeffer tallied his third game-winning goal of the season. Bobzien led the team with four points (two goals, two assists) and junior Matt Cutter (Needham/Needham, Mass.) had three points in the game. Senior Kevin Bush (Arapahoe [Colo.]/St. George Island, Fla.) scored two goals for the Bombers, his 12th and 13th of the season. Rose tallied his first goal of the season; Nelligan and Lepiane both added goals. Ithaca dominated face-offs, winning 18-of-23. Sophomore Nick Neuman (West/Madison, Wis.) won a career-high nine face-offs and collected a career-high six ground balls. Freshman David Gal (Loomis Chafee (Conn.)/Amherst, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season, and tied his career-high with seven saves.
 
SOFTBALL (13-5, 4-0 Empire 8): April 9 at Rochester; April 12 vs. Rochester Institute of Technology; April 13 at Elmira
The 20th-ranked Bombers swept a pair of Empire doubleheaders last week, beating St. John Fisher (8-2 and 3-1) and Alfred (2-1 and 7-1) to stretch their conference winning streak to 29 – the longest Empire 8 winning streak ever in any sport. Both of Saturday’s starters – senior Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) and senior Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Victoria, British Columbia) – pitched complete games against St. John Fisher. In the opener, junior outfielder Chelsey Feldman (Lynbrook/Hewlett) had three hits and scored two runs. The Bombers scored six third-inning runs on four hits. Senior Amanda Kowalsick (Riverhead/Jamesport) put Ithaca on the board with her two RBI double that scored sophomore Alyssa Guzman (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh) and Feldman. Freshman Kait Dolan (Victor/Farmington) walked and scored on a groundout by senior shortstop Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain). Sophomore Caitlin Ryan (Allentown/Clarksburg, N.J.) continued the inning with a RBI single that scored Cade. Senior catcher Stacy Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston) stole home for the final run of the inning. A fourth-inning RBI double by Dolan scored Feldman and Feldman singled in Ryan in the fifth. Cade pitched the complete game giving up just two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts. The Bombers wasted no time scoring in the second game, getting one run in the first on a Cutspec RBI single that scored Dolan.  Ithaca scored two more runs in the fifth inning off a two RBI single by sophomore Regina Douglas (James Caldwell/West Caldwell, N.J.). The single scored Kowalsick and Dolan who both singled to get on base earlier in that inning.  Myers pitched the complete second game, giving up 11 hits but allowing just one earned run, while striking out eight batters. In the Alfred opener, Cade hit a home run to lead off the fourth inning for the winning run. Ryan got the Bombers on the board in the second with a RBI single that scored Pelesz.  Cade pitched a complete game, giving up just one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts. In the second game, freshman third baseman Allison Greaney (John F. Kennedy/Iselin, N.J.) tied Ithaca’s single-game record with two home runs and drove in six runs. Greaney also tripled with the bases loaded. Myers pitched the complete second game giving up just one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts.
 
WOMEN’S LACROSSE (3-5, 2-3 Empire 8): April 12 at Rochester Institute of Technology; April 13 at Alfred
The Bombers posted a 1-2 mark last week, beating Elmira 21-6 and losing at St. John Fisher (16-13) and Nazareth (12-9).   Wednesday’s win over Elmira was head coach Karen Hollands’ 50th win at the helm of her alma mater. Sophomore Kylie McClure (Upper Arlington/Columbus, Ohio) led the Bombers with career-high totals of five goals and six points. Sophomore Lauren Fitzgerald (William H. Hall/West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Khrista Fieselmann (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, N.J.) both posted career-best scoring totals, collecting four and two goals, respectively. Senior Sarah Knauf (Irondequoit/Rochester) matched a career-high with three goals. Senior Meagan Howell (Newark/Newark) netted three goals, sophomore Sarah Cox (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) collected three points (including two assists) and junior Becky Bedard (East Longmeadow/East Longmeadow, Mass.) matched a career-high with four assists. Bedard raised her career total to 50 assists and is the sixth Bomber to reach that total. Senior goalie Emily Brooks (Ward Melville/Setauket) made nine saves. Bedard led Ithaca in the St. John Fisher game; she who had six points, and tied a career-high with three goals. Senior Kim Medla (Brewster/Brewster) also tallied three goals for Ithaca, and added two assists. Howell recorded two goals in the game. Sophomore Katherine Bixby (Germantown Friends/Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded her first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally at 12:06 of the second. Knauf led the team with three caused turnovers, and Brooks made 14 saves. At Nazareth the Bombers rallied from a 6-2 halftime deficit to pull within a goal twice in the second half but the host Golden Flyers never lost their lead. Medla led Ithaca with three goals – all in the second half. She raised her career totals to 123 goals (moving into sixth on the program’s all-time list) and 150 points (she’s the ninth Bomber to reach that total). McClure and freshman Catherine Hurley (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) both picked up two goals. Brooks made three saves. Bixby led the Bombers with four ground balls and added her first collegiate assist.
 
MEN'S CREW: April 12 vs. Hamilton, Skidmore and St. Lawrence
The Bombers hosted a regatta featuring Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday. Ithaca won four of the five races. The regatta was highlighted by an open-water win by Ithaca in the varsity 8 as the Bombers (6:18.3) finished ahead of Rochester (6:24.9) and RIT (6:28.3) improving to 4-1 on the season. Ithaca also picked up wins in the novice 8, the second novice 8 and the varsity 4. The Bombers were second to RIT in the second varsity 8. The varsity 8 was made up of senior coxswain Annie Bova (Onondaga/Syracuse), junior stroke Tom Poole (Whitesboro/Utica), senior seventh seat Julian Halfmann (John F. Kennedy/Berlin, Germany), sophomore sixth seat Nick Alvarez (Maine-Endwell/Endicott), sophomore fifth seat Chris Lisee (Randolph/Randolph, N.J.), junior fourth seat David Creak (Hutchins School/Hobart, Australia), sophomore third seat Brian Erickson (Kearny/Kearny, N.J.), senior second seat Eric Hojnowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse) and junior bow Pete Orlando (Fordham Preparatory/Pelham Manor). WOMEN’S CREW: April 12 vs. Hamilton, Skidmore and St. Lawrence
The Bombers hosted a regatta featuring Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday. The Bombers earned open-water wins in the varsity 8 and the second varsity 8. The fourth-ranked varsity 8 (2-1) crossed the line with a winning time of 7:15.3, more than 13 seconds faster than Rochester (7:28.6). The second varsity 8 (7:28.7) also defeated Rochester (7:37.5) by a comfortable margin. The varsity 8 was made up of senior coxswain Steffanie McKay (Langley/Great Falls, Va.), junior stroke Katie O’Driscoll (Quincy/Cohasset, Mass.), junior seventh seat Danielle Llopiz (Mast Academy/Miami, Fla.), junior sixth seat Kelsey Schaeffer (Ithaca/Ithaca), freshman fifth seat Lauren LaPointe (Lowell/Lowell, Mass.), junior fourth seat Alex Chesney (Hancock Central/Hancock, Mich.), freshman third seat Amy Gefell (Greece Arcadia/Rochester), senior second seat Kristin Morris (Bow/Bow, N.H.) and senior bow Candace Eastman (Oneonta/Oneonta). The second novice 8 was an all-freshman boat made up of coxswain Chrissie Devalle (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights, Ohio), stroke Liz Graham (Cortland/Dryden), seventh seat Michelle Rhodes (Dryden/Dryden), sixth seat Ruthie Goff (Chatfield Senior/Littleton, Colo.) fifth seat Desirae Huizinga (Candor/Candor), fourth seat Lindsay Mott (Los Altos/Los Altos, Calif.) third seat Alyssa Van Auken (Northampton Area/Northampton, Pa.), second seat Kasey Stevenson and bow Drea Kasianchuk (Kennett/Conway, N.H.).
 
 
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD: April 12 at The College of New Jersey Invitational
The Bombers opened their outdoor season over the weekend. Five Bombers competed at Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational Friday night. Junior Tim Shea (La Salle/Huntington Valley, Pa.) ran a personal-best time of 15:02.85 in the 5,000-meter run, qualifying for the ECAC Championships. He placed 28th. Senior Kyle Miller (Liverpool/Liverpool) also ran a personal-best time in the event (15:51.61). Junior Drew Hodge (Rancocas Valley Regional [N.J.]/Richmond, Va.) qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 10,000-meter run (32:41.43), finishing 33rd. Sophomore Curt Bell (Marcellus/Marcellus) and junior Danny George (Walter Johnson/Bethesda) competed in the 1,500-meter run, with Bell placing 15th (4:04.96) and George finishing 16th (4:05.14). Ithaca also competed at Saturday’s Osprey Open, hosted by Richard Stockton. No team scores were kept. Junior captain Cory Petermann (West Morris-Mendham/Chester, N.J.) placed first in the javelin with a winning of throw of 57.07 meters (187-3). He also placed fifth in the discus (40.49 meters/132-10). Four other Bombers recorded a top-three finish. Senior captain James Walker (Midland Park/Midland Park, N.J.) earned a career-best second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:15.30). Sophomore Phil Abbott (Lansing/Lansing) placed third in the event (10:34.24). Sophomore Andrew Brown (Monmouth Regional/Tinton Falls, N.J.) placed second in the pole vault, clearing 4.25 meters (13-11.25). Classmate Scott Walker (Midland Park/Midland Park, N.J.) was third in the 1,500-meter run (4:09.39). A pair of Bomber freshmen earned top-five finishes. Stefan Karfuff (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) placed fourth out of 25 runners in the 5,000-meter run (15:49.71). Classmate Kyle Devins (Ausable Valley/Peru) finished fifth in the long jump (6.44 meters/21-1 1/2). Devins was also ninth in the triple jump (12.94 meters/42-5 1/2).
 
MEN’S TENNIS (6-6, 3-0 Empire 8): April 7 at Hobart; April 9 vs. Alfred; April 12 vs. Stevens; April 13 at Nazareth
In their only match last week, the Bombers remained unbeaten in Empire 8 play with an 8-1 win at St. John Fisher Friday. Freshman Daniel Adelman (Pomfret School/Hampton, Conn.) picked up his first varsity singles victory with a three-set win at sixth singles. Junior Andrew Dunnick (Ithaca/Ithaca) also earned his first win of the spring season, teaming with sophomore Liam Berkowitz (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) to win 8-3 at third doubles. The Bombers swept the six singles matches, led by a 6-0, 6-1 win by sophomore Taylor Borda (West Morris-Mendham/Chester, N.J.) at first singles. Borda leads Ithaca with 13 singles wins.
 
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD: April 12 at The College of New Jersey Invitational
The Bombers opened their outdoor season Saturday at the Osprey Open hosted by Richard Stockton. Senior captain Caitlin Catella (Oneonta/Oneonta) was the winner of the 10,000-meter run, crossing the line with a time of 40:06.15. Led by Catella, the Bombers claimed the top six spots in the 10,000-meter run, with freshman Alissa Kersey (Sandy Creek/Sodus) placing second (41:01.79) and sophomore Bridget Hastings (Mercy/Colchester, Conn.) placing third (42:43.88). Other top performers for the Bombers included sophomore Sarah Moskey (Berlin/Berlin, Conn.), who placed third in the 800-meter run (2:26.00). Classmate Amanda Boccio (Guilderland/Albany) also earned a top-three finish, placing third in the 5,000-meter run (19:57.31). Three Bombers earned top-six finishes in the 1,500-meter run, led by a fourth-place finish (5:05.82) by senior Courtney Gallagher (Amherst Regional/Amherst, Mass.) .  Senior Audrey Harkness (Hamilton-Wenham/Amesbury, Mass.) finished fifth in the event, while freshman Catherine Ortiz (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh) placed sixth (5:09.38). Freshman Lucia Capano (Manchester Central/Manchester, N.H.) recorded a pair of top-six finishes, placing second in the triple jump (10.27 meters/33-8 1/2) and sixth in the long jump (4.95 meters/16-3).
 
 BASEBALL (15-6, 8-0 Empire 8): April 8 vs. Oneonta; Aril 12 and 13 vs. Rochester Institute of Technology
The Bombers won five games last week to stretch their winning streak to 12, beating Oswego 11-1 and sweeping a weekend Empire 8 series from Utica (winning 9-1 and 12-3 Saturday and 1-0 and 6-3 Sunday). Against Oswego, senior Nick Sottung (Pulaski/Pulaski) earned the win – the 28th of his career, tying the Bomber record set by his cousin Kyle Sottung from 2001 to 2004. Sottung struck out nine and allowed only one run over seven innings in improving to 5-0 this spring. Junior catcher Drew Ash (Morris Knolls/Denville, N.J.) paced Ithaca’s 13-hit offensive attack, collecting two singles and a three-run home run. Senior first baseman Shane Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) hit a two-run home run in the first inning.  Senior infielder Josh Smith (Pulaski/Richland) and junior outfielder Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) both collected a pair of hits. Sophomore shortstop Bryan Grastorf (Niskayuna/Rexford) drove in two runs and senior outfielder Eric Ferguson (Columbia/East Greenbush) and freshman third baseman David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) both scored two runs. In Saturday’s sweep of Utica, Shane Wolf had four hits at the plate with five runs batted in and scored four runs. He also pitched six innings for the win in game one, improving his record to 4-1 on the season. He allowed only one run and struck out 11 batters.  Samela and Ahonen both had five hits. Samela also scored five times and Ahonen had three runs batted in.  With three hits on the day, senior outfielder Rob Raux (Ilion/Frankfort) moved into fourth place on Ithaca’s all-time list with 190.  Starting on the mound in the second game for the Bombers was junior Pete MacDaniel (Schuylerville [N.Y.]/Locust Grove, Va.) who struck out four batters and gave up only three runs on four hits in five complete innings in the win, pulling his record to 2-2 this year. Freshman Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) and senior captain Brendan Conway (St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute/Grand Island) combined to pitch three innings of relief in the two games. Neither gave up a hit or a run. In Sunday’s opener, Samela beat out an infield single to short with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to drive in the game’s only run.  Trailing 2-0 in the second inning of game two, Ahonen singled to score Smith and Ash to tie the game. Utica took a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth, but a double off the bat of Ferguson drove in sophomore designated-hitter T.J. Abone (Rome Free Academy/Rome) for the game's tying run. Abone and Samela led off the inning with back-to-back walks, setting the table for Ferguson. Samela scored on a passed ball to give the Bombers the lead. Ferguson also scored after a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch on Ash. Pitching for the Bombers in game one was sophomore Tom Fishback (Webster Schroeder/Penfield), who tossed six full innings for the win, giving up three hits and one walk while striking out six. Game two's starter, junior Adam Brown (Greece Athena/Rochester) pitched five innings, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. Junior pitcher Bryan Gardner (Fairport/Fairport) appeared in relief in both games pitching three perfect innings and recording six strikeouts while picking up his fourth and fifth saves of the season, which move him into a tie for fifth all time on the Bombers’ career saves list. Gardner also moved into a tie for fourth place on the single-season saves list.
