Softball Shuts Out Oneonta in Doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The third ranked softball team swept a doubleheader against Oneonta (3-13) by scores of 7-0 and 8-0 to improve to 16-4 on the season. Junior pitcher Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) allowed just one hit while recording five strikeouts over five innings and went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI in game one.

In the first inning of game one, junior shortstop Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain) doubled to right field and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Bombers ahead, 1-0. Junior outfielder Amanda Kowalsick (Riverhead/Jamesport) added the second run of the inning off a single from Cade. The Bombers added two more runs in the bottom of the second off a single from senior outfielder Jenn Marro (Bethlehem Central/Delmar) that drove home junior third baseman Stacy Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston). Marro later scored on a passed ball to make it a 4-0 game.

The Bombers added a pair of runs in the third inning and closed the scoring with a run in the fifth for the 7-0 final. Freshman first baseman Caitlin Ryan (Allentown/Clarksburg, N.J.) had a career best 2-for-3 performance with one RBI.

In game two, the Bombers exploded for five runs in the third inning on back-to-back extra base hits from Pelesz and junior second baseman Jessica Stangarone (Brewster/Brewster). Pelesz hit a double off the left center field wall driving in senior catcher Hannah Shalett (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) and senior third baseman Mel Chinigo (Norwich Free Academy/Norwich, Conn.). Stangarone smashed the very next pitch to right center field for a triple-RBI triple.

Ithaca added two more runs in the fifth inning. Shalett led off the inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Pelesz. Stangarone drove in the seventh run of the game with a single to right field. Cade ended the game in the sixth with an RBI double to score Shalett for an 8-0 final.
