ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College women's tennis team, which captured its ninth-consecutive Empire 8 championship this season, had eight players capture a total of 12 awards when the 2013 Empire 8 Women's Tennis All-Conference Awards were announced Tuesday.
Freshman
Haley Kusak was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, and additionally earned All-Empire 8 First Team in singles and All-Empire 8 Second Team recognition in doubles. Kusak was 10-3 overall in singles play during the fall portion of the season and posted a perfect 6-0 mark in dual matches, with three wins at first singles, two at second singles and another at third singles. In doubles play, Kusak was 14-5 overall She was 9-0 in doubles in dual matches, with those victories spread between three different doubles partners. Kusak is the second consecutive Ithaca player to earn the Rookie of the Year Award.
Graduate student
Cristina Nunez earned first-team honors in both singles and doubles play, something that she has achieved in all four of her varsity seasons. Nunez was 11-4 overall in singles play, with all of those losses coming against top-level competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regionals and Small College Championships. She was 3-0 in dual matches in singles play. In doubles, Nunez posted a 7-3 overall record, and was 4-1 in dual matches. She played seven of her 10 overall doubles matches paired with Kusak.
Junior
Allison Vizgaitis was the third Ithaca player to earn all-conference nods in both singles and doubles play. She was a first-team selection in both singles and doubles. Vizgaitis posted a 10-3 overall record in singles play and was 7-0 in dual matches in singles, playing the second, third and fourth singles positions. She was 10-2 overall in doubles play, primarily paired with
Alyssa Steinweis, as that duo was 9-2 overall. With 20 overall wins, Vizgaitis ranked third on the team in overall victories with 20 total wins during the fall portion of the season. These are the third and fourth all-conference honors in Vizgaitis' career.
Junior
Alyssa Steinweis was an All-Empire 8 First Team pick in doubles play. Steinweis led Ithaca with 17 overall doubles wins, including a 10-0 doubles mark in dual matches. She also totaled 26 victories, a team-best for the fall portion of the season. Steinweis, the 2012 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, earned her first-career all-conference team selection.
Graduate student
Allison Young was also a first-team selection in doubles. Young has now totaled six all-conference awards during her career. She was 8-4 overall in doubles with a 6-1 doubles record in dual matches. Young was also the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championship Most Valuable Player after helping Ithaca to the conference tournament title earlier this fall.
Junior
Carly Siegel was a second-team selection in singles. She has five career all-conference honors. Siegel was 9-4 overall in singles play this season with a 7-0 singles record in dual matches. She appeared in the Bomber lineup at four different singles positions.
Sophomore
Marni Blumenthal earned an All-Empire 8 Second Team doubles spot. She was 11-3 overall in doubles play with an 8-0 doubles record in dual matches. Blumenthal teamed with three different doubles partners in her 11 wins, which ranked third on the team. It is Blumenthal's second-consecutive selection to the E8 Second Team for doubles.
Senior
Kelly Fishback was elected as Ithaca's representative on the Sportswoman of the Year team, which recognizes one player from each team for competing with honor and integrity. Fishback had a 6-5 overall record in singles and doubles matches on the year.
Ithaca finished the fall portion of the 2013-14 season with a 10-0 dual-match record, and has earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships in May 2014.
