2013-14 ECWC WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS

Wrestler of the Week - Bobby Dierna (Cortland)
Rookie of the Week - Jimmy Kaishian (Ithaca)


Sophomore 149-pounder Bobby Dierna (Webster, N.Y.) of Cortland, and freshman 125-pounder Jimmy Kaishan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) of Ithaca have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Dierna was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Kaishan was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Dierna, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, won his second straight Northeast Regional crown with a 4-0 mark to earn Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler honors at the regional. He opened the tournament with a pin and a 14-7 decision and continued his dominance Sunday with a 14-2 major decision in the semifinals versus fourth-seeded Joey Gaccione of Johnson & Wales and a 16-6 major over second-seeded Eric Hamrick of Springfield in the finals. Dierna is 23-3 this season and 58-6 in two years at Cortland. He was an All-American last year with a third-place national finish.

Kaishian won two bouts en route to a second-place finish at 125 pounds in the Northeast Regional. He won his semifinal match by 6-1 decision over Brian Amato of Worcester Polytechnic Institute to clinch a berth at nationals. Kaishian fell in the finals by a 6-2 score.

Wrestler of the Week - Lou Puca (Cortland)
Rookie of the Week - Jimmy Kaishian (Ithaca)


Junior 174-pounder Lou Puca (Huntington, N.Y.) of Cortland, and freshman 125-pounder Jimmy Kaishan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) of Ithaca have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Puca was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Kaishan was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Puca, ranked fifth nationally at 174 pounds, earned a 3-2 tiebreaker win over sixth-ranked Carlos Toribio of Ithaca with an escape during a dual match last week. Puca raised his record to 29-7 on the season with the decision.

Jimmy Kaishian started Ithaca’s dual-match victory over fifth-ranked Cortland with a decision victory at 125 pounds. He won 7-2 over Paul Fields of the Red Dragons. Kaishian got an early second-period reversal before his opponent escaped but Kaishian immediately regained control with a takedown and held a 4-1 lead into the third period. Fields got an escape in the third period, but a takedown in the final seconds and riding-time point for Kaishian gave him the 7-2 decision.

Wrestler of the Week - Nicholas Greenquist (RIT)
Rookie of the Week - Matt Booth (Ithaca)


Sophomore 165-pounder Nicholas Greenquist (Spring Lake, N.J.) of RIT, and freshman 197-pounder Matt Booth (Cattaraugus, N.Y.) of Ithaca have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Greenquist was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Booth was picked as the Rookie of the Week.


Greenquist, who placed third at the ECWC Championships at 174 pounds in January, moved down to 165 pounds for the upcoming regionals and started that run by posting a 7-2 win over Oneonta’s Shaun Gillen, who is listed in the contender portion of the d3wrestle.com rankings.

Booth capped Ithaca's victories in a 23-9 loss to ninth-ranked Wilkes with a 6-2 decision against Eric Bach. He led 3-1 headed to the third period and stretched the lead to a 6-1 margin with near-fall points early in the third. His record now stands at 17-9 for the season and he dropped Bach to 13-7.

Rookie of the Week - Roy Daniels (Brockport)


Junior 125-pounder Asher Kramer (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) of Brockport, junior 133-pounder Alex Gomez (Brentwood, N.Y.) and freshman 165-pounder Roy Daniels (Spencerport, N.Y.) of Brockport have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Kramer and Gomez were named the Co-ECWC Wrestlers of the Week and Daniels was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Kramer won three bouts en route to the John Summa Invitational title, as he pinned his first opponent in 3:42 and won a major decision 13-2 victory over teammate Dillon Stowell in the semifinal round. In the championship bout, Kramer posted a 9-3 decision over Gordon Bieber from Waynesburg.

Gomez went 3-0 Saturday in three dual victories for the Bombers at Oneonta. He won his first two bouts by technical fall and his third by pin to improve his overall record to 22-2 on the year. Gomez won 17-2 in a second-period tech fall over Wesleyan to start the day, and followed that up with a 22-7 tech in his second match against Williams. The decisive points came with just three seconds remaining in the second period. In the final dual of the day, Gomez pinned a wrestler from Oneonta at 2:47.

Daniels took second in the 165-pound weight class at the John Summa Invitational, as he posted a fall in the quarterfinals against Ohio Northern’s Jacob Sowers and then he added a 7-3 decision against Thiel’s Sean Byham. He lost in the championship bout in overtime to Washington & Jefferson’s Nicholas Carr.

Rookie of the Week - Mike Beckwith (Cortland)


Junior 141-pounder Brian Bistis (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) of Cortland, junior 133-pounder Rory Bruce (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) of RIT and freshman 165-pounder Mike Beckwith (Greene, N.Y.) of Cortland have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC). Bistis and Bruce were named the ECWC Co-Wrestlers of the Week and Beckwith was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Bistis, ranked fifth nationally at 141 pounds, helped lead the nationally fifth-ranked Red Dragons to two dual-match wins over the weekend, raising the team's record to 11-3 on the season. In a 19-18 criteria win versus Delaware Valley on Friday, a pin by Bistis at 3:47 proved to be the decisive bout. His six points earned with the fall gave Cortland the extra team point on the second tiebreaker as the team's split the 10 weight classes with five wins each. On Saturday, Bistis moved up a weight class to 149 pounds and earned a pin in 4:26 as Cortland defeated Nassau Community College, 40-4. Bistis improved his record to 14-5 with four pins on the season.

Bruce won both of his matches by fall for the Tigers. On Wednesday, Bruce pinned James McCabe of Brockport in a time of 3:27. On Saturday, Bruce pinned Jason Charlette of Alfred State in 2:10, as RIT rolled to a 33-12 win. Bruce is now 12-7 this season with a pair of pins and is 6-3 in dual meets.

Beckwith took the 165-pound title at the Jamestown Open this past Sunday, posting a 4-0 record on his way to the crown. He opened with a pin in 3:55 over Niagara County C.C.'s Chris Nevinger. Beckwith then earned a 17-1 technical fall in 6:07 over Joe Knarr of Penn St. DuBois. In the semifinals, he recorded a 5-3 decision over teammate Colin Barber, and claimed the title with a 16-0 technical fall over Buffalo's Ryan Therrier in the finals. Beckwith improved to 5-1 on the season.

Wrestler of the Week - Lou Puca (Cortland)

Junior 174-pounder Lou Puca (Huntington, N.Y.) of Cortland and freshman 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Puca was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Barger was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Puca, ranked seventh nationally at 174 pounds, won in both of Cortland's dual-match wins during the week of Jan. 26. He won 11-4 against Oneonta on Wednesday, then pinned nationally fifth-ranked Conner Lefever of Wabash to help the Red Dragons beat the fifth-ranked Little Giants, 27-14, on Saturday. Lefever entered the match with a 24-1 record. Puca improved to 25-7 on the season with the two wins. Cortland, ranked 10th nationally, is now 9-3 in duals this winter.

Barger earned 14 team points for Lycoming while leading the team to a 2-1 finish at the Mel Berry Duals on Friday night, Jan. 24. He started the night with a key pin in a 24-21 win over Baldwin Wallace, added a 6-4 decision in a 33-15 win over Mercyhurst North East and finished the night with a tech fall against Brandan Collins of 24th-ranked Thiel. Barger has won seven straight matches to improve to 21-10 on the season.

Wrestler of the Week - Alex Gomez (Ithaca)
Rookie of the Week - Nolan Barger (Lycoming)


Junior 133-pounder Alex Gomez (Brentwood, N.Y.) of Ithaca and freshman 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Gomez was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Barger was picked as the Rookie of the Week. Both are being honored for the second time this year.

Gomez was the top-seeded wrestler at the ECWC Championships on Jan. 18 and he won all three of his bouts convincingly, earning bonus team points with each victory to pick up the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award. In the quarterfinals, Gomez scored an 18-4 major decision, then posted a win by pin at 2:57 in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Gomez won a 21-5 technical fall in 6:10 over Sean Hanson of Oneonta. Gomez is ranked second by both the NWCA and d3wrestle.com.

Barger, the lone freshman champion at the ECWC Championships, picked up the title at 157 pounds after entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed. Barger notched an 11-9 decision against Oneonta's Samuel Rachman in the quarterfinals  before beating the top-seed, Cortland State's James Ondris, 4-3, in the semifinals to set up the championship match, where he beat teammate and No. 3-seed Brian Watkins, 5-1.

Wrestler of the Week - Joe Giaramita (Cortland)
Rookie of the Week - Seth Lansberry (Lycoming)


Sophomore 197-pounder Joe Giaramita (Elwood, N.Y.) of Cortland, and freshman 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference for the week of Jan. 14. Giaramita was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Lansberry was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Nationally fourth-ranked Joe Giaramita posted a 4-0 record at 197 pounds to help the eighth-ranked Red Dragons to a second-place finish at the 20-team Budd Whitehill Duals over the weekend. In a 22-19 win versus York of Pennsylvania in the first round, Giaramita recorded a key pin that tied the match at 19-19 allowing Cortland to pull out a 22-19 victory. He next recorded a 12-4 major decision in a 29-9 victory versus Williams in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals against 10th-ranked Ithaca, Giaramita earned a 9-2 decision that helped the Red Dragons score a 19-18 win versus the Bombers on criteria. He wrapped up the weekend with a 12-7 decision against Messiah in the championship match. For the season, Giaramita has a 21-5 record with seven pins and four majors for Cortland (7-3).

Lansberry also had a fine weekend at the Budd Whitehill Duals, posting a perfect 4-0 record to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The 149-pounder picked up three decisions and a tech fall, including wins in matches against three nationally-ranked teams (No. 23 Heidelberg, No. 14 Johnson & Wales and No. 25 Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He improved to 21-6 on the season for the Warriors (7-6).

Wrestler of the Week - Scott Bova (Oswego)
Rookie of the Week - Skyler Ebner (Lycoming)


Junior 184-pounder Scott Bova (Poughquay, N.Y.) of Oswego State, and freshman 197-pounder Skyler Ebner (Muncy, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference for the week of Jan. 7. Bova was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Ebner was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Bova notched a 2-0 record at the Pa./N.Y. Duals for Oswego State, notching a 4-0 win over Lycoming’s Johnathan Secor, who started the season ranked in the honorable mention portion of the d3wrestle.com rankings and followed that with a 5-0 win over 2013 NCAA qualifier Shane Stark of King’s.

Ebner, in his lone action of the week, helped Lycoming finish its meet against RIT on a 15-point run in the final three bouts of the 29-9 win, as he posted a pin over Wyatt Albanese in 2:10. Ebner has recorded a 7-10 record this season and has won three of his last five bouts.

Wrestler of the Week - Bobby Dierna (Cortland)
Rookie of the Week - Seth Lansberry (Lycoming)


Sophomore 149-pounder Bobby Dierna (Wayne, N.Y.) of Cortland, and freshman 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference for the week of Dec. 22. Dierna was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Lansberry was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Dierna, ranked first nationally at 149 pounds, finished 4-0 at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas. He pinned two of his opponents, won once by technical fall, and earned a 6-3 decision over seventh-ranked Brandon Welter of Wartburg. Dierna is 14-3 this season with five pins, a tech fall and four majors.

Lansberry finished third at the Wildcat Open at Johnson & Wales while improving to 17-4 overall. He opened the tournament with a 9-1 major decision against Niagara County's Carmen O'Donnell. After a loss in the semifinals, Lansberry pinned freshman teammate Walter Fox  in 3:42 and capped the day with a pin in 33 seconds of Johnson & Wales' Ethan Farrell in the third-place match. He leads the Warriors with five pins this year.

Wrestler of the Week - Kristopher Schimek (Ithaca)
Rookie of the Week - Brian Bulger (Cortland)


Junior 174-pounder Kristopher Schimek (Cherry Creek, N.Y.) of Ithaca, and freshman 184-pounder Brian Bulger (Westfield, N.J.) of Cortland have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference for the week of Dec. 17. Schimek was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Bulger was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Schimek helped lead Ithaca past RIT, 26-9, and Oswego, 31-12, in dual matches. Against RIT, Schimek scored a 21-4 technical fall at 6:41. Against Oswego, he dominated his opponent as he Schimek scored 14 points in the first period on four takedowns and two near falls, and then won by pin 42 seconds into the second period. He is 12-2 overall this season.

Bulger scored four points in the third period to overcome a 4-2 deficit in a 6-5 win over Tyler Brent during Cortland's 43-0 dual-match win against RIT. Brent entered the match with a 15-9 record and 13 pins. Bulger improved to 5-3 on the season.

Wrestler of the Week - Paul Glover (Brockport)
Rookie of the Week - Carlos Toribio (Ithaca)


Senior 197-pounder Paul Glover (Rochester, N.Y.) of Brockport, and freshman 174-pounder Carlos Toribio (Brentwood, N.Y.) of Ithaca have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Glover was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Toribio was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Glover won the 197-pound title at the New Standard Invitational tournament, posting a 7-5 win over Aaron Karnes from Delaware Valley in the title bout. Karnes is ranked second in the country in the NWCA poll. He beat Troy Uhrin from York in his first bout, 10-2, and pinned Jared Weaver from Elizabethtown College in 3:15 and then beat Zach Coleman from York, 2-0, in the semifinals.

Toribio earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors and went 4-0 in his bouts to take the 174-pound title at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College. He won his first match by decision, and his quarterfinal by injury default at 4:38. In the semifinals, Toribio scored a 9-2 decision, and then defeated ninth-ranked Zach Zotollo of TCNJ in the finals by a 5-4 decision. Toribio improved his overall record to 11-2 on the season.

Wrestler of the Week - Lou Puca (Cortland)
Rookie of the Week - Seth Lansberry (Lycoming)


Junior 174-pounder Lou Puca (Huntington, N.Y.) of Cortland, and freshman 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC). Puca was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Lansberry was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Puca finished second at 174 pounds at the all-divisions New York State Collegiate Championships. He went 3-1 with a pin during the tournament. Puca defeated a wrestler from Division I Cornell in the semifinals, 5-4, before losing to Columbia University in the finals. Puca is 15-4 on the season and is ranked second nationally in Div. III.

Lansberry notched five wins, three against ranked teams, to lead the Lycoming wrestling team and improve to 10-1 on the season, including 6-0 in dual meets. He started the week with a sudden-victory, 7-5 win over 2013 NCAA National Qualifier Jordan Dyer in the dual meet with Brockport. He finished the week a perfect 4-0 at the Mount Union Duals, posting a 7-2 decision against No. 5 Messiah, a 3-2 decision against No. 12 Waynesburg and another 3-2 decision against No. 29 Mount Union. He also posted a pin in the Warriors' 46-0 win over Muskingum.

Wrestler of the Week - Paul Glover (Brockport)
Rookie of the Week - Jacob Green (Cortland)


Junior 197-pounder Paul Glover (Rochester, N.Y.) of Brockport and freshman 125-pounder Jacob Green (Chenango Forks, N.Y.) of Cortland have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC). Glover was named the ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Green was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Glover won the 197-pound title at the Eastern Michigan Open. He beat three division I wrestlers en route to the championship. He defeated Eastern Michigan’s Derek Schultz, 7-4, in his first bout, Ohio University’s Kyle O’Donnell, 2-0, in the quarterfinals before downing Georgia Blades (Indiana Tech) 5-3 in the semi’s. In the finals, he beat Kenneth Hayden from Michigan, 6-2, to with the individual title.

Green finished in third place with a 4-1 record at 125 pounds at the Roger Williams Invitational. He won his first two matches, one by a major decision, before losing to the nationally ninth-ranked wrestler in the semifinals. Green then rebounded to win his final two bouts, including a 9-2 decision in the third-place match. Green is 9-4 with three major decisions on the season.

Junior 133-pounder Alex Gomez (Brentwood, N.Y.) of Ithaca, sophomore 149-pounder Bobby Dierna (Webster, N.Y.) of Cortland and freshman 174-pounder Carlos Toribio (Brentwood, N.Y.) of Ithaca have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Gomez and Dierna were named the ECWC Co-Wrestler of the Week and Toribio was picked as the Rookie of the Week.

Gomez won the 133-pound weight class bracket at the Ithaca Invitational with a dominating performance. As the top seed in his weight class, Gomez won his quarterfinal match by pin in 4:11. He won the semifinals and finals by major decision, with a 15-2 win in the semifinals and a 16-2 win in the finals. Gomez is ranked second nationally at 133 by the NWCA.

Dierna finished tied for fifth out of 36 wrestlers at 149 pounds at the Binghamton University Bearcat Open. He finished with a 4-2 record with two pins and two major decisions. His only losses came to wrestlers from Division I Penn State and Binghamton, and three of his four wins came against Division I opposition.

Toribio made his collegiate debut with four wins and captured the 174-pound title at the Ithaca Invitational. In the opening day of the tournament, Toribio won his opening-round bout by first-period pin in 1:57 and his quarterfinal bout by 4-3 decision. In the semifinal round, Toribio scored a 7-5 sudden-victory decision and then won the championship bout by a 19-4 technical fall.

Wrestler of the Week - Brad Mayville (RIT)
Rookie of the Week - Nolan Barger (Lycoming)


Junior 149-pounder Brad Mayville (Marion, N.Y.) of RIT and freshman 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa.) of Lycoming have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Mayville was named ECWC Wrestler of the Week and Barger was picked as Rookie of the Week.

Mayville, the No. 2 seed at 149 lbs., finished as the runner-up at the Monarch Invitational hosted by King's College on Saturday afternoon. He started the day with a 7-2 win over Thomas Carta of Cortland before defeating Nicholas Heck of Oneonta by a fall in 34 seconds. In the semifinals, he needed overtime to defeat Seth Lansberry of Lycoming by a pin. In the championship, Mayville fell to top-seed and sixth-ranked Mark Hartenstine of Wilkes, 8-6.

Barger finished third at the Monarch Invitational at 157 pounds, as he fought out of a first-round pigtail, posting a 4-2 win over Roger Williams' Ryan Butler before notching a 7-2 win over Cortland State's Chris Sarro and pinning Roger Williams' Tyler Herzog to reach the semifinals. He lost to Washington & Jefferson's fifth-ranked Josh Etzel, but rebounded with a 10-2 major decision over Wilkes' Stephen Tuener and wrapped up the tournament with a pin of Wilkes' Tyler Lauchaire in 4:47 to take third.
