Ithaca Leads After First Day of NYSCTC Championship

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The Ithaca College women's track & field team competed on Friday, Feb. 27 at the NYSCTC Indoor Championship in the Gordon Field House at RIT. After the first day, Ithaca leads ten other schools with 80 points. The Bombers have a 34 point margin over St. Lawrence, who is currently in second place with 46 points.

Natalie Meyer earned a second place finish in the pentathlon with a score of 3,012 points. Brianna Hayes followed in sixth after scoring 2,789 points.

Junior Alex Rechen topped the pole vault with a height of 3.35 meters. Katherine Pitman also reached 3.35 meters but finished third on attempts. Both Rechen and Pitman's performances qualified for ECACs. Teammates Amanda Zaput hit 3.30 meters to place fourth, while Lexi Calvet and Beth Schomp tied for fifth after clearing 3.05 meters.

Senior Christine Benway finished third in the long jump after marking a personal best distance of 5.40 meters. Fellow senior, Emilia Scheemaker took fourth with 5.37 meters and Meyer reached a length of 5.22 meters to place sixth. All three Bombers met ECAC qualifying marks with their distances.

The distance medley relay team of Rachelle Sartori, Kristen Swanson, Alexis Kindig and Emily Smith ranked seventh with a time of 12:45.79.  

Rachel Friedman, Christine Kelly, Leigh Martino and Emily Williams made up the 800-meter relay team that took second in 1:46.36.

Both the DMR and 800-meter relay teams hit ECAC qualifying marks.

Senior Kristina Stockburger took first place in the weight throws by reaching 15.62 meters. Brandy Smith finished third overall with a distance of 15.47 meters. Yvonne Palacios threw a distance of 14.37 to rank eighth. Stockburger, Smith and Palacios all qualified for ECACs in the weight throws.

Juniors Sarah Werner and Lizzi Dowling both hit ECAC qualifiers in the 60-meter dash preliminaries. Both Werner and Dowling clocked times of 8:02 seconds and will run in the finals tomorrow.

Eliza Dewart met ECAC qualifying times in both the 200-meter dash preliminaries with 26.35 seconds and 400-meter dash preliminaries with 59.96 seconds.

Elizabeth Dowling (27.14 seconds), Christine Kelly (27.21 seconds) and Rose Paskoff (27.45 seconds) also qualified for the finals in the 200. Sophia Feuer (1:00.36) and Colleen Smith (1:01.66) will run in the 400 finals tomorrow.

Benway qualified for the championship in the 60-meter hurdle prelims as well, with a time of 9.34 seconds. Amber Edwards will also compete in the 60 hurdles finals after clocking a time of 9.46 seconds in prelims.



Day two of the NYSCTC Championship will resume tomorrow, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m.
