Rochester, N.Y. -- The baseball team (24-11, 9-3 Empire 8) secured its eight-straight Empire 8 title Sunday by picking up one win in a doubleheader at Rochester Institute of Technology (21-10, 7-4 Empire 8). After falling 4-1 in game one, the Bombers bounced back for an 11-5 victory in game two. Junior
Eric Ferguson (Columbia/East Greenbush) led the way by going 5-for-9 with one RBI and two runs scored on the day.
The Bombers tried to rally in the sixth inning of game one after falling behind 4-0 after two innings. Junior designated hitter Shane Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) led off the inning with his ninth double of the season. Wolf, who was 1-for-3, advanced to third when senior right fielder Eric Maya (Rome Free Academy/Rome) singled to extend his hit streak to a team-best 10 games. Wolf scored the Bombers' run when the ball got past the RIT catcher during junior centerfielder Matt Samela's (Staples/Westport, Conn.) at bat.
Junior Nick Sottung (Pulaski/Pulaski) got the loss despite striking out four batters in six innings. He is now 7-3 on the year.
The Bombers came out swinging in game two and got runs early and often as they scored three runs in both the first and second and two runs in the fourth. Ferguson, who went 3-for-5, got the team rolling when he singled with two outs in the first and junior catcher Rob Raux (Ilion/Frankfort) followed with another single. Senior first baseman Jason Friedman (Whitney Young/Chicago, Ill.) loaded the bases by walking, which set the stage for junior shortstop Josh Smith (Pulaski/Richland) to double, driving in all three on base. Both Friedman and Smith went 2-for-3.
The Bombers continued the scoring in the second as sophomore designated hitter Jared Roth (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) and Ferguson both scored when Raux reached on an error by the RIT pitcher. Ferguson had reached base by hitting his team-leading 10th double of the season. Ferguson has accumulated 51 hits this season, placing him second to senior leftfielder Jeremy Peters' (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica) 52.
Peters registered a hit in the seventh and scored on a Ferguson single. Earlier in the inning Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Dylan Perez (ConVal Regional [Conn.]/Peterborough, N.H.) and junior second baseman Todd Czerno (Columbia/Brainard) scored on a RIT error.
Raux blasted his team-leading third home run with two outs and nobody on in the fourth. Raux finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Wolf remained perfect on the mound (5-0) by striking out three batters in a complete game.
The Bombers travel to Montclair State Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
