An outstanding center for the Bombers basketball team, he was the first varsity basketball captain at IC and one of the team’s top scorers in 1931. He competed in the Penn Relays (1930-31) in the decathlon events and was a medal winner in 1931. At one time, he held six track and field records at his alma mater. After graduation, he coached for 36 years, finishing at Wilson (NY) Central in 1967. The Wilson athletic field was named Walter J. Hutchison Field.
