Hicks earned one letter each in football and wrestling at Ithaca College. He went on to have a successful boxing career, and at the time of his induction had a 26-4 record in the light heavyweight division ranks and was the leading contender for the title. He lost an eight round technical knockout, on cuts, to champion Bob Foster in November 1971, but was doing very well before the referee was forced to stop the action. In addition to his boxing, Hicks taught Physical Education to the mentally and physically handicapped children of the Ithaca area for three years before assuming a new position with the Dryden School District, where he taught several subjects to handicapped children.
