Proechel won three letters in baseball at I.C., two each in basketball and football and one in soccer. He led the basketball team in scoring as a senior, and in baseball hit a solid .325 for his two varsity seasons while playing a strong defensive third base. Following graduation, Proechel played two years of minor league baseball and then joined the Marines, serving 25 months during World War II. After his discharge, he coached three freshman sports at Clarkson for eight years before going into private business in 1954. Proechel coached many minor league baseball teams throughout Northern New York and New England, and started several standout players, such as Johnny Podres and Johnny Kucks, towards major league careers.
