From 1971 to 1984 Ithaca wrestlers qualified for national competition through the Independent College Athletic Conference (ICAC) championships.

Beginning in 1985 qualifying was switched to the NCAA East Regionals.

The 1991-92 season brought the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference qualifier. Each season, conference and regional champions qualify for the NCAA championships along with a predetermined number of wild-card selections.
