STEVENS POINT, Wis.—In a title chase that came down to the 190-pound championship match, Ithaca won its third national championship by edging out Wartburg, 77.75-75.
Ithaca and Wartburg went head-to-head in the 190 bout to determine the title, and Steve Farr won a 2-1, overtime, sudden-death decision over Jon Dawley. The two were tied 1-1 after regulation, then wrestled a scoreless overtime period. In the tiebreaker, Dawley won the coin toss and chose the down position. Dawley needed only an escape to win, but Farr held on for the 30-second period to earn the victory. In the process, he became Ithaca’s third individual national wrestling champion.
Like Farr, Kent Maslin and Matt Sorochinsky each reached the championship match. Maslin lost 8-7 in the 150-pound final, while 158-pounder Sorochinsky lost 2-1 in an overtime tiebreaker.
Chris Matteotti and Mike Murtha also earned all-American recognition by placing fourth and fifth at 118 and 177, respectively. Vinnie DiGiacomo, a 126-pound competitor, and 167-pounder Karl Zenie scored points for the Bombers as well.
John Murray was named Division III coach of the year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association after guiding seven qualifiers to the championship.
