Brandy Smith Sets Discus Record at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
The Ithaca College women's track & field team competed at the 121st Penn Relays on Thursday at Franklin Stadium. Ithaca met seven ECAC marks on the first day of the prestigious three-day event.

Sophomore Brandy Smith highlighted Ithaca's opening day with a school record mark in the discus of 48.05 meters (157 feet, 7 inches). Smith owned the previous best throw of 46.97 meters which she set at this year's Empire 8 Championships on April 19. She placed eighth overall out of 25 entries and topped the next closest Division III competitor by nearly seven meters.

Smith is currently third in Division III after today's performance and is less than a meter from the top spot – 48.76 meters.

She also competed in the hammer throw with senior Kristina Stockburger which consisted of 33 athletes. They were the only two DIII entries and placed 24th and 27th overall in ECAC-qualifying marks. Stockburger measured out 46.46 meters (152' 5"), while Smith reached 45.78 meters (150' 2").

Senior Leigh Martino qualified for ECAC's in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.56. Martino finished fourth among DIII runners in the field of 56.

The 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Lizzi Dowling, Eliza Dewart and Sarah Werner, and sophomore Rose Paskoff clocked a time of 49.66 seconds to surpass ECAC standards. There were 98 teams in the event, 89 of which completed the relay, and Ithaca was third in DIII.

Dewart and Martino, along with freshman Sophia Feuer and sophomore Colleen Smith ran in the 4x400-meter relay. The squad completed the race in 4:00.32 to reach ECAC standards and finished second in DIII. A total of 82 teams ran in the 4x400.

Senior Alexa Rick placed 14th overall in the 10K with a time of 36:26.91 which surpassed an ECAC mark. Rick was the top DIII runner in the event that cosisted of 23 entries.

Ithaca will be represented tomorrow by senior Emilia Scheemaker in the triple jump at 9:30 a.m., the 4x200-meter relay team and the sprint medley squad.

Paskoff, senior Rachel Friedman, junior Christine Kelly and freshman Grace Ryan will race in the 4x200, while Dowling, Kelly, Colleen Smith and freshman Taryn Cordani will run in the sprint medley.
