VARESE, Italy – Former Ithaca College crew captain,
Erik Frid, finished up at the
2014 World Rowing Under-23 Championships late last week, placing 14th overall out of 20 in the men's double sculls.
Frid and partner Walter Banfield finished third overall in their first heat representing the United States, placing behind first-place Spain and second-place Russia with a time of 06:37.990. The pair placed third again in the repechage with a time of 06:38.880. Hungary placed first with a time of 06:33.350, while Italy took second with a finishing time of 06:35.700.
Frid and Banfield took first out of four in their consolation semifinal, finishing in a time of 06:36.450. Their time beat out Latvia, Austria and Brazil to earn a spot in the 6-boat C-Final for 13th place overall. They would go on to place second in the C-Final with a time of 06:36.130, barely losing out to Latvia (06:35.200) in a rematch of their consolation semifinal. The finish earned the former Bomber a 14th-place overall finish.
Frid gained a spot on the roster by placing first in the double sculls at the Under 23 World Championship Trials on Mercer Lake earlier in the month. The United States finished second overall with five medals, including three golds, one silver and one bronze. New Zealand took the top spot with three gold medals, two silver and one bronze.
Varese is located in the Northern part of Italy, 55km north of Milan. Lake Varese, is 8.8 km long and 4.5 km wide. It has hosted the Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2007, 2012 European Rowing Championships and 2013 World Rowing Masters Regatta.
