Ithaca Wins 14th Straight Empire 8 Commissioner's Cup

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Ithaca College has won the Empire 8 Commissioner's Cup for 2013-14, the 14th consecutive year that Ithaca has won the all-sports award. Standings for the Commissioner's Cup are determined by schools' finish in standings or championship tournaments within conference sports. Ithaca, which sponsors 22 of the league's 23 sports, totaled 131 points out of a possible 148 good for a percentage of .885.

Ithaca has placed ahead of second-place Stevens Institute of Technology each of the last six years.

Ithaca led the fall standings after earning maximum points in six of the nine conference-sponsored sports. The Bombers won championships in the fall in football, women's soccer, women's golf, women's cross country, men's cross country and women's tennis.

The winter season brought four more conference titles for Ithaca in six winter-sport opportunities. Indoor track and field championships were earned by both men's and women's teams and women's basketball and women's swimming & diving also won conference titles.

In the spring, Ithaca continued to excel, with championship points earned by men's lacrosse, baseball, softball, women's track & field and men's track & field. The women's lacrosse and men's tennis teams finished second to complete the seven-sport spring season.

Commissioner's Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 standings at the completion of the season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale. Houghton is also not calculated into the standings based on NCAA provisional status). The conference championship team in each sport receives the highest amount of points, followed by the runner-up. Teams tied for a position are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual amount of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine percentage.
