ITHACA, N.Y. – The 20th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (0-1) suffered a season-opening loss to 10th-ranked Geneseo (2-0) Thursday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.
The Knights held a two-goal advantage at halftime and edged Ithaca 4-3 in the second. Geneseo and Ithaca exchanged goals for a 2-2 deadlock at 14:31, before the Knights tallied three straight. A pair of
Ally Runyon goals was split by a Geneseo score for a 6-4 gap at the half. The Knights extended their lead to 7-3 to open the second frame, but Ithaca netted three straight to knot the game at 7-7. Geneseo held the Bombers scoreless and closed out the game with three of their own for a 10-7 final.
The game was tight across the board. Ithaca outshot Geneseo, 19-18, collected 15 ground balls to the Knights' 14, and won 10 draws. Geneseo won nine. Ithaca led the turnover count, 16-15.
Runyon, who converted 2-of-3 free position shots, led the Bombers with a hat trick, while senior
Becky Guzzo added one score and an assist. Additional goals came from juniors
Niki Standera and
Molly Fischer and sophomore
Riley Marion. Juniors
Natalie Lang and
Emily Peters each contributed an assist.
Marion led the Bombers with five draw controls. Standera and Peters collected three ground balls apiece and senior
Anya Eckhardt forced two turnovers.
Rookie
Emily Ross suffered the loss in goal in her collegiate debut. She made four saves.
