ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball team (5-14, 1-8 E8) defeated Elmira (5-11, 1-5 E8) Tuesday evening, dropping the Soaring Eagles by a score of 69-68 at Speidel Gymnasium.
Senior
Frank Mitchell led all players with 25 points in the victory, adding nine rebounds, two assists, three blocks and three steals. Sophomore
Sam Bevan chipped in 11 points and led the Bombers with six assists. Sophomore
Joey Ross contributed six points to go along with two assists and three steals.
Ithaca led for the majority of the opening period, as the Bombers took a one-point lead three minutes into the contest and never gave it up. Ithaca went on a 12-4 run over the next five minutes, jumping out to a 16-7 lead on the Soaring Eagles. After a brief run by Elmira, the Bombers jumped out to a double digit lead, taking a 34-22 advantage into the break.
Elmira closed the gap in the first part of the second half, tying the contest at 46-46 with just over 10 minutes to go in the game. Ithaca responded with six-straight points, eventually jumping out to a seven point lead on two other occasions over the next four minutes. Elmira continued to fight, closing the gap again to tie the contest at 64-64 with 1:24 to play in the game.
The Bombers took a one-point lead with 13 seconds left to play, before Ross hit two free throws to push Ithaca's advantage to three. A last second Soaring Eagle layup cut the Ithaca lead to one, but it wasn't enough as the Bombers came away with the 69-68 win.
The Bombers are back in action on Feb. 4, as they take on Houghton in a road contest at 6 p.m.
