ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball team (4-12, 0-6 E8) lost a tough road contest to Nazareth (10-5, 4-2 E8) Saturday afternoon, dropping a 77-58 decision to the Golden Flyers at Kidera Gymnasium.
Senior
Frank Mitchell led Ithaca with 22 points, marking the seventh time this season that he has reached the 20-point plateau. He added six rebounds, an assist and two steals. Freshman
Leonard Davis chipped in four points and led Ithaca with seven rebounds, while senior
Tom Sweeney contributed 13 points and a team-high two blocks. Sophomore
Sam Bevan paced the Bombers with six assists.
Ithaca shot 43.8 percent from the floor, connecting on 21-of-48 shots. The Bombers were 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) from three point range and 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line. Nazareth shot 50.8 percent, going 30-of-59 from the floor, including a mark of 10-for-21 from beyond the arc. The Golden Flyers shot 58.3 percent on 7-of-12 shooting from the free throw line.
The first half was dominated by tight defensive play, as neither team was able to break the 30-point mark in the opening frame. The lead changed 12 times and was tied four times in the first 20 minutes of play. With the score tied, Nazareth connected on a dunk with a minute remaining. Freshman
Joe Masino hit a free throw in the closing seconds to pull Ithaca back to within one, sending the game to halftime with a score of 28-27 in favor of the Golden Flyers.
Sweeney scored the first points of the second frame, hitting a jumper to put the Bombers up by a score of 29-28. Nazareth answered back with a three in the following possession, giving the Golden Flyers a two-point lead. Nazareth would not relinquish the lead in the remaining 19 minutes, going up by as many as 22 points on Ithaca. Although the Bombers were able to cut into the lead, Nazareth still walked away with the 77-58 conference victory.
Ithaca is back home on Jan. 24, as the Bombers take on Stevens at Ben Light Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
