Men's Basketball Drops 79-63 Decision to Cortland In Home Opener

ITHACA , N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball team (2-4) lost to Cortland (3-0) Tuesday night, falling to the Red Dragons by a score of 79-63 in the Bombers' first home game of the season at Ben Light Gymnasium.

Sophomore Sam Bevan led the way offensively for the Bombers, going 6-for-14 from the floor for a career-best 17 points. Senior Chris Jordan matched a season high with 14 points, while fellow senior Frank Mitchell chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Mitchell also led the team with two blocks and two steals.

Ithaca shot 41.1 percent from the floor, including a mark of 6-for-20 from three point range. The Bombers went 18-for-27 from the charity stripe.

After three ties and several lead changes to open the game, Cortland went on a run to jump out to a seven point lead just over nine minutes into the first half. The Bombers then went on a run of their own, recording 16-straight points to take a 25-16 lead with 6:52 left in the first frame. Ithaca's strong surge in the closing minutes of the stanza gave the Bombers a 37-29 lead heading into halftime.

Cortland came out on fire in the second half, shooting 57.7 percent from the floor including a mark of 7-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Red Dragons' hot shooting at the beginning of the frame chipped away at Ithaca's lead. Cortland tied the contest for the fifth time at 40-40 with 16:36 remaining in the second half.

Cortland eventually jumped out to an 11-point lead with 10 minutes left in the game and never looked back. Ithaca chipped away at the lead for the remainder of the game, but was never able to pull back, falling to the Red Dragons by a score of 79-63.   

Ithaca is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 7 in a home contest with St. Lawrence at Ben Light Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
