Bombers End NCAA Tournament Run With 1-0 Loss To William Smith

Box Score
GENEVA, N.Y. – The No. 7 Ithaca College women's soccer team (19-3-0) lost to No. 3 William Smith (21-1-0) Sunday night, falling to the Herons by a score of 1-0 in the NCAA sectional finals at Boswell Field. The Bombers end the year with 19 wins, tying a program record.

Freshman Taylor Baranowsky led the Bombers with four total shots and two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Coppolecchia stopped 4-of-5 shots in the loss.

Both teams recorded a number of scoring chances in the opening frame, with Ithaca and William Smith each collecting 10 shots in the half. The Bombers held a slight edge in shots on goal, sending four shots on the Heron net compared to three shots for William Smith.

The Bombers' best chance came roughly 15 minutes into the half. Senior Jackie Rodabaugh sent a perfect pass between two Heron defenders, connecting with sophomore Kelsey King at the top of the box. King got a touch on the ball, but sent a shot into the chest of William Smith's goalkeeper, Chelsea Dunay.

Despite the chances, both goalkeepers were perfect in the first 45 minutes, sending the game to the half at a scoreless draw.

The Herons broke the scoreless tie in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. William Smith's Dineo Mmutla took control of the ball roughly 25 yards out and sent a hard shot through the Ithaca defense. Mmutla's shot snuck through, beating Coppolecchia to her left side.

Ithaca pressured the Herons for the remainder of the contest, but was unable to score in the final 25 minutes of play, ending the Bombers' 2013 season. Ithaca's run in the NCAA Tournament marked the program's fifth trip to the NCAA quarterfinals in seven seasons.

The loss also marked the final game for seniors Amanda Callanan, Elise Sherman, Jackie Rodabaugh, Alex Liese, Meredith Jones, Erika Ilkanich, Anna Gray, Ellyn Grant-Keane, Jamie Ruddy and Becca Lewis.
