ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team (17-2-0) defeated Penn State-Behrend (15-6-1) Saturday afternoon, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 victory over the Lions. Sophomore
Kelsey King led the way with two goals, while freshman
Taylor Baranowsky chipped in one score in the victory. Sophomore
Beth Coppolecchia picked up the shutout win, marking her eighth solo shutout of 2013.
King didn't waste any time, getting the Bombers on the board with a goal just 40 seconds into the contest. King made a great individual effort, dribbling the ball into the box and firing a shot low to the right side for her first tally of the day.
Ithaca struck again in the 14th minute, taking an early 2-0 lead. Senior
Amanda Callanan started the play, taking possession of the ball at the top of the box. Callanan slid a pass over to Baranowsky in the slot, giving her plenty of time to fire home her third goal of the season.
The Bombers sealed the victory just over a minute into the second half, as King earned her second score of the day to make it 3-0. Callanan took control of the loose ball after an Ithaca corner kick and deflected a pass over to King in the lower end of the box. King connected for her team-leading 14th goal of the season, securing the victory for the Bombers.
Ithaca will now face Rowan in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Carp Wood Field. The Profs defeated Skidmore, 1-0, in the second regional match of the day. This will mark only the second meeting between the programs. In their only previous game, Ithaca defeated Rowan in overtime, 2-1, in the 2009 NCAA Sectional Semifinal match. Sunday's game is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
