ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team (8-5, 2-2 E8) lost to No. 6 William Smith Tuesday night, falling to the Herons by a score of 4-1 at Higgins Stadium. Sophomore
Taylor O'Neil scored the lone bomber goal, while freshman goalkeeper
Katie Lass made 12 saves on 16 Heron shots. The Bombers also recorded two defensive saves in the contest.
William Smith got on the board early, scoring the game's first goal just eight minutes into the first stanza. The Herons scored again in the 21st minute, giving William Smith the 2-0 lead heading into the half.
The Herons opened the final frame with two-straight goals, scoring in the 53rd and 55th minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead.
Ithaca finally got on the board just 11 seconds after the final William Smith tally. Freshman
Colleen Keegan-Twombly took control of the ball along the goal line on the far side, eventually moving towards the front of the Heron net. After a scrum in front, O'Neil jammed a shot past the William Smith goalkeeper, marking her second tally of the season.
The Bombers were unable to challenge offensively for the remainder of the half, securing the 4-1 victory for the nationally-ranked Herons.
Ithaca is back in play on Oct. 19, facing off against Washington & Jefferson in a road contest at 12 p.m.
